He forgot about Rykov

Will be interesting to see what the Rangers got in Rykov....seems to be a prospect in the sense that he has size, skating and leadership abilities, but is still working out how to play defense effectively. Not much scoring by the looks, but seen a couple of reports that he makes a good first pass

He will be here 2 weeks after the trips to WTC site and a visit to Museum of Natural History then back home via Aeroflot.

Rykov is a 20 year old defenseman playing in the KHL.... the fact he gets ice time at all is impressive.

Last year was his last WJC where he finished 2nd highest scoring defensman with 7 pts in 7 games

Charlie McAvoy came in 3rd with 6 pts...

See how the draft plays out first. There could be more trades then, so roster players could still be moved.

I don't want Kovy to keep Chytil or Andersson off the roster if they're ready to make the jump. We could end up drafting Svechnikov or another NHL ready winger, and wouldn't want to prevent that, either.

Kovalchuk Namestikov Svechnikov
Kreider Zibanejad Buchnevich
Vesey Chytil Zuccarello
Spooner Hayes Fast

.... No Andersson??

Kreider for Trouba or some kind of offense for defense would be open as a possibility. Which, may need to happen anyway.

Skjei Shattenkirk
Hajek DeAngelo
Gilmour Pionk

Would be our fate defensively, otherwise....

But I think they can ice a real good team, if they play their cards right here at the draft and free agency. Kovy doesn't have to be a part of that equation, but he could

To me the bottom line is we'll have loads of cap space, and many prospects, and many picks. Add that all up and we have TONS of options at the draft/via trade/in free agency. It will be fun to speculate about how things will play out over the next 14 to 16 weeks, but who knows which way Gorton will play it given the numerous options available.

Totally agree, there is no situation I want a Kovalchuk, Nash or even Grabner back. As is, I would rather see Zibanejad, Kreider, Buchnevich, Namestnikov, Spooner, Hayes, Chytil, Andersson ect getting PP time. If Kovalchuk and or Nash are here any coach would be feeding them prime time minutes at the expense of someone younger and in the plans. The above listed Ranger players have enough talent to produce on the power play, it’s a matter of some belief in them a good power play plan and work work work on the execution. Chewy flips guys around every other game and can’t figure out why it struggles.

I personally would have no issue with Kovy being here at the right price. If he is looking for crazy years or a big payday, then we pass. If he is looking to be fair and sign a shorter deal for reasonable money I'd have no issue having him here. He will score 25 for sure I think, and has the R shot we have needed badly for a long time. Plus with the Russians we have coming over in the next two years I think he'd help there as well.

Wouldn't break the bank, but have zero issue signing him if reasonable.

What he’s getting paid now is most likely fair in his and his Agents mind. $5,500,000 tax free. The Rangers and every NHL team know full well, he’s one of the highest paid KHL players and will get similar money for a new contract over there. At 35 going into next season he’s probably looking for 3 to 5 years. To get $5,500,000 tax free over here he probably has to gross $10,000,000. In his mind that’s probably fair. I would doubt any team offers that kind of money but he’s still going to command in the $6 mill plus per year range. And even then his probable take home of 1/2 that is unlikely to excite him or his agent. Radulov gets $6,250,000 and is 3-4 years younger. Kovalchuk’s agent will probably think that’s fair.

If he wants 3 + years at 6 mill per or more I pass. If he wanted 2 years for 13 mill let's say, I would think about that given the short # of years. I wouldn't mind bumping the AAV a bit if we got him for 2 years. If he wanted 3 years I'd need that AAV in the 5's. And if he wanted more than 3 years no shot I'd do it unless the AAV was in the 4's.

That's how I would play it, and if that didn't work for him I'd pass. I have a feeling Gorton will see it the same way. I cannot see 3 years + at 6 mill per (or more)...cannot see Gorton doing that at all.

To fully clarify my Kovy position.

I would offer 2 years 13 mill +/-. I'm okay with a little higher cap hit of 6.5 +/- for the short term of 2 years given the cap space we'll have, and the knowledge we'll have a lot of young kids on their entry level deals the next 2 seasons. Ideally I'd love to see 2 years around 10-12 mill, but know that is highly unlikely.

If he wants 3 years I would cap it somewhere between 15-16.5 mill in total value. Meaning 3 years with a 5 to 5.5 mill cap hit TOPS.

Under no circumstances would I go 4 years or longer for Kovy. And I personally see no shot Gorton does that.

That's how I would play it, and I would aim for a 2 year deal if I could get that done. If Kovy wants more than that let him get it from some other team.

I'm not philosophically opposed to Kovy, but I think it's all moot because ultimately it's a play by Kovalchuk's agent to get more leverage and money out of his next KHL contract.

He'll end up staying in the KHL again just like he did last July when this circus was last in town.

I actually disagree with that. I think he'll be back in the NHL next season. Also he will be a UFA this summer and not under Devils control like he was this past summer. Never know, but I would bet on him being in the NHL next season.

I guess the only caveat I will throw on that is if getting this long deal for huge money is the only goal, then yeah I guess he could stay in the KHL. I don't think that is the driver here, but we'll see.

The thing The Rangers have going for them is (if you're against the idea)... I would think Kovy's motivation for being in the NHL would be less about money, and more about winning a Cup.

NY may be attractive if he wants to be the big brother to Russian kids.... but he can do that in Russia.

He likely wants a Cup, so look for a team like Pittsburgh to sign him, and still be under the cap somehow

Kovalchuk will also be 35 on April 15 - which means id he signs a multi year contract, his contract would count against the Rangers even if he is playing somewhere else or not playing at all. If he gets hurt, the Rangers could get relief from LTIR. There is no we I sign this guy. Why would he come to the Rangers? Next season is a rebuild with almost no shot at the cup.

I think the way the Rangers treat a above average NHL'er like Namestnikov, who has been very impressive, will be indicative to any Eastern European player that the Rangers treat players right. Thats pretty much well known throughout the hockey world. And Namestnikov is probably a better mentor and guy for them to relate to being a lot closer in age. And to be honest I'm not sure Kovalchuk's reputation is other than playing for himself. New Jersey jumped through a lot of hoops to get him and he left them high and dry. I don't want him as mentioned but thats just me. I think they are better to hang onto cap and be available to take a guy like Namestnikov off of cap challenged teams. Cap space is a huge asset in todays NHL. Tieng it up on Kovalchuk for three or four years would be a waste of a valuable asset. Use it on younger players, or player..

I will say this right now...there is ZERO chance Gorton signs Kovy for 4 years. If he does I will fall over...I see no way he does that. I would go two years for sure like I wrote above. I really see little downside with that. And I could be convinced on 3 years for a lower cap hit in the 5's tops. But no way could I ever see Gorton giving him 4 years, so I won't even lose a second of sleep over that...not happening.

I really think Kovy will be here because he wants to be in NY as a Ranger, and I just don't think money will be his driving force. And I say again I really think people are looking at this the wrong way if they think we are in for some long rebuild, I just don't see it. Next year solid team that will battle for a playoff spot. Two years I think back battling for a legit shot at bigger things.

The only reason for him to come back would be to win a Cup, but he left when he was 30 years old and left $50m on the table, so I can't say that winning the Cup is that high on his list of priorities.

His base KHL salary is reportedly $5.5m, but without bonuses, endorsements, or taxes. So figure about 30% for that, he's making maybe the equivalent of an NHL $8m at the end of the day. Is an NHL team going to want to sign a 35+ contract for that amount of money? I don't see it happening.
