We cannot (and should not) deal everyone and every vet. Not only is it a really bad idea it is also not going to happen. I know young players and picks are like shiny toys, but go take a look at how doing that has worked out for many MANY NHL teams. Teams that are either maybe just starting to turn the corner after YEARS AND YEARS of nothing or still haven't turned the corner after YEARS AND YEARS of nothing.

It is not a good idea to deal everyone and every vet and hope to hit it big. That is a long questionable road and far from guaranteed to work as we see with many teams. The better path is the path I believe Gorton is taking us on. I think he has a plan that I called out above, and I expect him to follow that.

There is nothing wrong with trading guys that havent won with us for young solid NHL guys or high end prospects....ESPECIALLY the Rangers......1 Cup in 80 years ....whats your idea? give 30 yr old Zuc an extension? Hold on to 27 yr old Kreider who will be old when we are ready to contend...instead of cashing him at his highest value now?

Exactly, and they did that. Trading every single vet is the issue. Not "trading guys" who haven't won with us. We have traded a handful of guys who haven't won with us. And I am not even saying don't deal anyone else. My point is they will not all be dealt. You pretty much name every vet and say trade him and trade that guy. They will not all be dealt.

And lastly I think we have a very different view of what the Rangers are doing. I expect a quicker reboot. I think you expect years of down time. I don't, and I don't think Gorton does either. 26 and 27 year old guys will still be in their primes and can be part of the next run here.

I do agree we should explore everything, but I also know we need to keep some vets here also as we will want to win sooner rather than later. If not next year, certainly in two years.

And yes D is certainly the area of focus right now...agree for sure.

The old Ranger way of giving monster contracts that turn in to buy outs has to end.....raise young kids and put a good team together with spot vets here and there....then when the kids get to UFA like a Mac or a Tavares...you cash them in for re tooling

Rankings today if we get #10 pick Jesperi Kotkaniemi C (6'1", 188), a Kopitar-like player or Bode Wilde D (6'2" 197). Serron Noel at# 16 is a monster RW (6'4" 200). Mattias Samuelsson, Kjell's son D (6'3" 209) committed to Western Michigan is ranked #28 and Albin Eriksson LW (6'4" 207) is #29. Third round pick should be Adam Samuelsson, Ulf's son D (6'5" 240) if he's still around. Also of interest is #65 Kevin Bahl D (6'5" 225) and #79 Curtis Douglas C (6'8"!, 234).

If we can't move up into top 3, I'd go with Kotkaniemi, trade up to get Noe and Eriksson in the 1st round. Maybe Alexander Alexeyev at #48 D (6'3" 184) in 2nd round and Adam Samuelsson in 3rd round. Use a 2nd round pick to move up to 16.

That would give us a C, LW, RW and 2 D in 3 rounds. We'll see. BTW, there sure are a lot of <6' in 1st round (11), 2nd round (20) and 3rd round (7).

And no one is saying give monster contracts. Gorton will not do that unless it is for a difference maker. I expect nothing more than 3 years tops. But we will not sit back and draft all these kids, and play all young kids, and deal off all vets, and not sign anyone and go into a multi year coin flip type rebuild. It won't happen. If that is what you want/expect you will be disappointed. I promise you that.

If you really look at it I think the Rangers made the right call on most of those guys. Cally had one good year with TB and has been hurt a ton. Hags is along for the ride with Pitt and hasn't added much. Dubi has been nothing special. Duclair hasn't done much. So we really didn't give up much, and actually were smart to move those guys and not sign Cally for 6 mill per or Hags for 4 mill per.

With that said the signings you mentioned were not good. And the trades we made to deal away most of the guys you mentioned were at best okay (the Nash deal) and in other cases bad. So don't come back and debate the moves with me, because I agree they were not rock star moves. But we also need to mention the guys we dealt away we were smart not to resign to the deals some of them received, and none of them have really performed big.

I have no issues moving the players we moved. They have all pretty much underperformed on other teams (with maybe the exception of Artie who has been just okay...and we have had a lot of okay guys). Again...bad deals (outside of the Nash deal) because of the picks we threw in, and it didn't work out because we didn't win a cup, but the actual players we dealt we were smart to move on from instead of giving big deals out to them also.

With last night's loss to the Islanders, the ideal situation for remaining games is

Lose in regulation to Flyers
Chicago wins
Edmonton wins

I believe that would put us in 7th place.

Yes...a regulation L to the Flyers and 1 point for the Hawks out of their 4 remaining possible points locks us into 8th. We can jump to 7th if the Oilers win as well as pointed out.

Whether it's 7/8/9 I don't see us keeping the pick unless the market is dead.

They could package the pick plus an NHL asset to move up a few spots, if they find a partner who thinks their guy might fall.

They might package the pick plus another pick to get a young NHL player that they consider to be a core piece.

Depending on how long they actually expect the rebuild to take - they may move down some spots and pick up pick(s) for next year. I don't think this is very likely but if something else doesn't happen and the Rangers get on the clock and there's still some good options - I would certainly explore this.

IMO 7/8/9 is a no-man's land in this year's draft - there's a talent dropoff after about 4/5 and then again after about 8/9...I think we should be looking to either trade up and get a more impactful player, or trade down and get more picks. If they end up picking withe their original pick that's fine too, but I feel like it could be put to better use.

I really don't see top 3 happening. I think there's an outside shot we might get as high as 5 if the stars align. I don't see why a team picking top 3 would trade it away for a package of picks.

I mean if it was three firsts and Skjei then maybe. But those teams are looking for an elite franchise player just like we are.

I think that was Red's point. Hope for 7th worst record which increases our odds of winning the lottery to at least move into the top 3. The odds of getting into the top 3 do go up a decent amount if you jump from 9 to 8 and especially up to 7th worst record.

That's why it was absolutely imperative we lost last night, and it is absolutely imperative we lose in regulation tomorrow (which I think will happen as the Flyers are playing for the playoffs). Then from there I do think the Hawks get a point OR Edmonton beats the Canucks, which means we are 8th. We'll see if both of those things happen to get us to 7.

Hawks loss hurts us. Hard to see them getting a point tonight at the Jets. Most likely now we need an Edmonton win to get 8th OR we'll be 9th if Edmonton gets beat. I do believe we'll hold up our end of the bargain by losing at Philly with their playoff lives on the line, and us playing a few more kids today as well.

So it appears to be 8th or 9th now as 7th seems to be gone.

Go Flyers and Oilers.
