MVP Posts: 5713 ![]() | For your free trade discussion. How Big is Walmart? Who shops at Walmart? This should boggle your mind! And Probably scare you as well!!!!! 1. At Wal-Mart, Americans spend $36,000,000 every hour of every day. 2. This works out to $20,928 profit every minute! 3. Wal-Mart will sell more from January 1 to St. Patrick's Day (March 17th) than Target sells all year. 4. Wal-Mart is bigger than Home Depot + Kroger + Target + Sears + Costco + K-Mart combined. 5. Wal-Mart employs 1.6 million people and is the largest private employer, and most can't speak English. 6. Wal-Mart is the largest company in the history of the world. 7. Wal-Mart now sells more food than Kroger Safeway combined, keep in mind they did this in only 15 years. 8. During this same period, 31 Supermarket chains sought bankruptcy. 9. Wal-Mart now sells more food than any other store in the world. 10. Wal-Mart has approx. 3,900 stores in the USA of which 1,906 are Super Centers; this is 1,000 more than it had 5 years ago. 11. This year, 7.2 billion different purchasing experiences will occur At a Wal-Mart store. (Earth's population is approximately 6.5 billion). 12. 90% of all Americans live within 15 miles of a Wal-Mart. 13. The value of product for Wal-Mart passing through the port of San Diego each year is a larger sum than 93% of ALL countries Gross National Product (GNP)..... and that is only ONE port... one way – that’s how Wal-Mart gets it's stuff. 14. Of the 1.6 million employees, only 1.2% make a living above the poverty level. 15. Wal-Mart's head office is located and centralized in Bentonville, AR. Due to this fact, there are more millionaires per square mile there than any place on Earth. 16. The official U.S. Government position is that Wal-Mart's prices are no lower than anyone else's when compared to a typical families weekly purchase. That's the view of the statisticians at the Bureau Of Labor Statistics (BLS) responsible for calculating the Consumer Price Index (CPI). 17. 92% of everything Wal-Mart sells, comes from China. Another 4% comes rom Chinese owned companies in the U.S. or in 3rd world Countries. 18. Wal-Mart and MOST large companies, take out life insurance on it's employees, without their knowing. If an employee dies, ALL the insurance moneys go to the companies. (i.e. An employee making $18,000 per year, dies, and the company might make as much as $1 million. Most often these monies, coming from what is commonly referred to as "Dead Peasant Life Insurance Policies", is paid out to executives as bonuses. A common practice, unknown by the average consumer. 19. Wal-Mart now averages a "profit" (not sales) of $36 billion per year. 20. Let Wal-Mart bail out Wall Street. If not, consider shopping someplace else. If we closed all the Wal-mart stores would China go bankrupt?

Wal-Mart and Amazon basically rule retail sales, both online and in stores. Both have used some form of crony capitalism, where the government gives them an advantage in the marketplace their competitors don’t have, to achieve their dominance. Whether it be a sales tax exemption for online sales or tax breaks for bringing their business to a particular state/city, they have destroyed free market capitalism.

If this blurb is true over 90 % of Walmart’s crap is coming from China. And probably very high numbers for Amazon as well.. Basically selling Chinese crap for a commission. Might have something to do with the trade deficit.

Legend Posts: 15326 ![]() Location: USA | Rranger - 2018-03-08 9:14 PM Staggering numbers. If true. The numbers are wildly off, I stopped fact checking after the first few. 1. Based on 2016 revenue (last full year reported) it's not $36m every hour, it was in fact $58m every hour of the day for FY2016. 2. You can't calculate profit from that number, revenue and profit are completely different things, and it shows that whoever originated this list has a very poor understanding of business. 3. Based on 2016 reported revenue this is close enough to accurate 4. This isn't close to right either, those companies combined are at $345B, Walmart is $260B. I'm sure some of the rest have some basis in reality but it's just one of those lists that people read and share because it's easy to be awed by big numbers. The point of the list is obviously the huge financial impact Walmart has on both US and China, and this is fundamentally true. "If we closed all the Wal-mart stores would China go bankrupt?" You can't be serious.

![]() Legend Posts: 12893 ![]() Location: New Jersey | Wal-mart is what it is.... It is to the products that they sell, to what McDonalds is to hamburgers.... If you want a crappy product for cheap, then go to Walmart.... and a lot of people do because that's what they can afford! It would be nice to get a real hamburger for $1, but that's not happening. You get what you pay for. That doesn't make McDonalds and Walmart evil, or their CEOs less derserving of their salaries. If it's to be said that 1% of the world's population works at a Walmart..... then I suppose without Walmart, that 1% would be unemployed, right? And just because companies take advantage of crony capitalism, doesn't make it any better, or that we should further pull away from free trade! Quite the contrary. We should be fighting to get government out of the way as much as possible in just about every scenario. We should be promoting entreprenuership! Government doesn't create jobs, free markets do!

I need to mark this day on my calendar, because it may be the first time I am in COMPLETE agreement with Rob. ![]() The one thing to keep in mind about Wal-Mart: they are the only legit competitor that Amazon has, and without that competition we would be in bad shape as consumers if Amazon had a complete retail monopoly. Even Toys R Us is liquidating today because of the "Amazon effect".

This stuff looks good on a bumper sticker but trust me, you don't want to live in that world. Lead paint can be cheaper than non-toxic, but what happens when a corporation uses it on baby toys that kids suck on - because they are prioritizing corporate profit over public safety? (Regulated by Consumer Product Safety Commission) What happens when there are no regulations on what you can dump into drinking water? I'm sure the shareholders don't care, as long as their EPS continue to rise. (Regulated by EPA) Speaking of public safety, rob you're a butcher? You know anything about the meat packing industry of the early 1900's? (Regulated by FDA) Government can, and should, work to protect public safety and foster a healthy society. Sometimes this means limiting what corporations, who are driven solely by profit, can and should do. To what degree, sure is up for some level of debate, but you can't possibly disagree that there are many, many instances where government "interference" can and SHOULD be prioritized over profit.

Sure, I'm not saying zero government.... The Government's main job is to provide protection. That means military, yes.... but it also means clean air, food, water, and things like you mentioned. Beyond providing safety is where lines should be drawn. We need regulations, but there's a thing called too much. Labeling is important.... there's only a problem with lead paint, if nobody knows it's lead paint! If the toy says TOXIC: keep out of reach of children.... I don't think they'll be selling too many toys
