Report: Ilya Kovalchuk to sign 2-3 year deal
4/9/18 | 7AM: Ilya Kovalchuk is "set to sign" a 2-3 year deal with the Rangers, according to Russian reporter Igor Eronko.

He is expected to receive a cap hit in the range of $6 million per season. (Sports Express)

Kovalchuk has indicated that he plans to return to the NHL for next season when he is allowed to sign with any team as a UFA.

He can technically begin speaking with teams on April 15 but can not sign his new contract until July 1.

It had been speculated that Kovalchuk wanted to join the Rangers and that the Rangers would potentially have interest in him.

In the KHL this past season, Kovalchuk had 31 goals and 32 assists in 53 games, with 5 goals in six Olympic Games. In the playoffs he had 10 points in 15 games

Just like I have been saying for weeks. I knew this was happening, and I knew the years would be 2 or 3 for around 6 mill. No surprise, and it is a perfect fit and start for us as we remake the team.

Can’t complain about the deal or player...

Should be able to help the younger guys, especially Buchnevich

If this is true, this is a dumber move than signing Brad Richards or trading for Jagr. Makes Redden signing look like a brilliant move.

STUPID! STUPID! STUPID!!!

Less money & less years than Brad
Cost no assets like Jagr did

But definitely worse

No....but I've said from the moment this nonsense was brought up that it would be a dumb move. If this is true, my faith in Gorton has dropped to negative numbers.

Yeah, this 2 or 3 year deal for 6 mill per is absolutely worse than the NINE year 6.66 per cap hit deal Richards signed here. And worse than the 6 year 6 mill per deal we gave Redden. Totally worse. I mean really they are exactly the same...LOL.

Good stuff.

Giving a multi-year, $6M deal to ANY player 35 and older is stupid!!! It's not a move you make when you announce to your fan base halfway through the season that you are rebuilding/retooling/whatever you decide to call it. That makes it as bad or worse than the deals mentioned.

Yeah what a terrible move, I was hoping Jesper Fast would be our top line winger again next year.

This would be questionable if The Rangers were going for a 5+ year Edmonton style rebuild.... but they're not. Rebuild is over, folks. I shouldn't have to apologize for this, but they're going to ice a good team next year....

Why?

He's here for 2 years, boosts MSG's marketing and justifies a ticket price increase, gets paid, goes on his way. In the two years he's here you buy enough time to refill the pipeline and get younger core players ready for NHL action. Do you expect to ice a team with draft picks and prospects? The Islanders have been trying to do that for 15 years, how's that working out for them.

Report says "lya Kovalchuk is "set to sign" a 2-3 year -- almost assuredly 3 years....MSG doesn't not meed marketing help.....if memory serves, it's already been announced there will be no price increases.....there are plenty of serviceable FAs that you can sign and/or players to trade for.

You don't want "serviceable" you want players who can help your youngsters learn and develop the skills they have. You want Cody McLeod dumping the puck in so Chytil can retrieve, or do you want someone to skate it in with him so he gets experience reading the play and capitalizing on what the defense gives him?

Talent has to play with talent or else there's no point in having talent.

Unreal is giving an old player who's been out of the NHL for years a 3 year contract for big money. I can't give you names at this point, but people around here are acting like he's the only option. That too is unreal.

$6 mill for 2 is better than $6 mill for 3. No doubt he will help. He plays the same shooter side on the PP Zibanejad does, which means Zib is second fiddle, and Zib hasn’t exactly shown signs of being able to do much other than shoot. . Be interesting to see how that plays out. I always thought he was another selfish Russian only worried about himself. But recently I read a article where Brodeur blew his horn on what a great teammate he was. Brodeur should know that much, and that’s a pretty good endorsement so I guess we will see. He will also be a lock on the power play taking ice time away from a younger developing player, but it’s not like the Rangers are loaded with guys ready to dominate a power play. The downside is the pp will revolve around Kovalchuk and if you shut him down you shut down the Rangers PP.
Gorton still needs at least three quality defenseman before they can begin dreaming about respectability. Shattenkirk, Skjei, Staal, and Pionk is not exactly scaring anyone. Rangers got a long ways to go.

Rangers don't have a powerplay, so that's a moot point right now.
