He's also been talking to SJ, and Detroit. Apparently about 9 teams interested, per "sources"

Well, there are what may be 5-7 teams that can possibly win over the next 2 years, have a chance. How many of those team can pay him? I don't know... And, I still question how effective he will be @ 36 & out of the league for so many years, basically playing a step above minor leagues.

That's also assuming his primary motivation is winning (a Cup) which I don't believe either. He's followed the money at every opportunity so far in his career, so I don't expect this time to be any different. He'll go to the highest bidder in a city that he's comfortable with.

I would think he made a fortune as the KHL is known for their ridiculous salaries -- look at what they paid JJ for his three years.

I'm pretty sure the KHL matched the salary The Devils threw at him.

He's coming to the NHL to win a Cup.

If he signs here, it'll be a tradeable contract. He'll want to win here, but he really just needs his foot in the door of the NHL... prove he still has crazy skills... and the rest will take care of itself

And on a huge sheet of ice with plenty of room for him to operate. He is more valuable to a team that can win.

Do you really want a guy entering his last contract, who has many options including Cup contenders, that would sign with a team that has no chance at a cup, and worse yet a winning environment? The Rangers may be in for a very long season if Gorton doesn't pull a few defensemen and some offense up front out of the draft and free agency. Right now its hope some of Chytil, Andersson, Howden, Hajek and Lindgren make a significant impact this season. A top four D of Staal, Pionk, Shattenkirk, and Skjei makes my eyes bleed. I can't imagine Kovalchuk coming here unless of course he relishes the thought of playing with Zibanejad or Hayes, and I doubt that very much. He's not coming.

I can see the Ottawa pick saying "i'm not playing there" NHL midday show spilling the beans on how bad and dysfunctional the organization is....without a doubt Karlson is a goner

He's not coming to the NHL to win a Cup. He's coming because the Russian economy tanked in 2014 and the money he made is worth much less than it is when he made it. He's coming because the 2014 financial crisis crippled the ruble to the point that the KHL, once considered a "challenger league" to the NHL when it was able to lure NHLers away, is struggling financially and he knows his best shot at a big contract is in American Dollars.

Every contract related decision he's made in his career reflects the mindset that his championship is his bank account:

He came to the NHL to chase the money, as the RSL could not compete for talent lik this in 2001. Couldn't hammer out a deal in Atlanta, rejecting a $101m contract in order to force a trade, and subsequently signing a $102m front loaded contract with the Devils. Chasing the money. He realizes a couple years later that he could make the same money, tax free, in Russia, and he leaves millions on the table from the Devils and "retires" to play in Russia. Chasing the money. Russia's economy crashes in 2014-15 and his fortune is worth a fraction of what it was. (Should have stayed in NJ). Now that his current wealth has taken a hit, and his future earnings also in doubt due to Russian economy, all of a sudden he's going to un-retire and make good old fashioned $USD again, because he wants a Cup?

If he ever cared about a cup he never would have left the NHL. Let's see where he signs, I bet it'll be the place that just so happens to make the most financial sense for him. (I also bet it won't be NYC.) My rubles are on Dallas, Vegas, or Panthers, personally.

The defense is NOT atrocious, the defensive scheme (what where was of it) was worse than atrocious -- it was disastrous. I'm sure that with a workable d-scheme, Staal, Skjei and Pionk will be fine.

How do you figure that?

Lockout ended, he came back to the Devils, retired in the offseason leaving $77m on the table. So how does the lockout mean he never would have left.

They go from playing for a lunatic with unrealistic expectations and resulting defensive shortcuts, to a coach who allegedly wants more physicality and in your face hockey , and a miserable to play against team which includes defense. Coach's words not mine. I'd say they have a huge personnel problem with defensemen incapable of playing that style. Skjei is the only one with any hope of physical play. The rest don't have any.

Because during the lockout, he played in Russia....

https://nypost.com/2013/07/14/blame-lockout-for-kovalchuk-bolting-de...

If the league had it's act together, he would had never thought to go home. He would had never had the chance to see what that life was like. He almost didn't come back to finish the season

http://www.nj.com/devils/index.ssf/2013/07/ilya_kovalchuk_leaves_de...

The money was there, and made it easier to give in to the idea, but...

If I'm in his shoes... the NHL gets shut down AGAIN... 2nd or 3rd time in his career.... I would've been pissed at the league. Then he goes home. Gets to be with old friends and family... no problems at all... be the best player in the league. National hero.

Or he could go play in NJ and hope there's no lockout in two years.

We are advised by an "expert" that we don't even have a top pair guy anywhere in our system....that includes all recent draftees and acquisitions that have been made via trade. And you say we have maybe one guy that has any hope of physical play.

Haven't played a system where physical defensive play has been emphasized in quite some time, so its interesting how these evaluations can be made.

Cant imagine how you guys haven't been hired by an NHL team with your talent evaluations.

As R pointed out...Skjei is our only hope of a legit 1st pair D...and he had a rotten last season
Your statement implies that someone on D had a good year.

Skjei was the best of a bad bunch

Our D is atrocious...It makes my eyes bleed too lol....Gorton HAS to make a trade
The defense is NOT atrocious, the defensive scheme (what where was of it) was worse than atrocious -- it was disastrous. I'm sure that with a workable d-scheme, Staal, Skjei and Pionk will be fine.

We dont have a top pair guy anywhere in our system

They go from playing for a lunatic with unrealistic expectations and resulting defensive shortcuts, to a coach who allegedly wants more physicality and in your face hockey , and a miserable to play against team which includes defense. Coach's words not mine. I'd say they have a huge personnel problem with defensemen incapable of playing that style. Skjei is the only one with any hope of physical play. The rest don't have any.

We are not talking bout the system dip****. Playing physical in college is really going to help the Rangers.
