Maybe he puts it together in Hartford, but the writing seems to be on the wall Maybe? But don't you want to give a 20 year old defenseman at least a year in the AHL before he's labeled a bust? I mean the chances are pretty high that he tops out in the AHL, and after a year or two he goes to Europe. Which is fine since he was a third round pick... I just think expectations should be in line with the player he is, not the player he was when he was 15.

![]() Legend Posts: 12890 ![]() Location: New Jersey | It's just pretty telling that he doesn't get much of a look in Traverse City, nor even a game in preseason here. I'm not looking at the status he was given when he was 15. We're talking about a player we drafted in the 3rd round.... a round that produced Buchnevich and Duclair. Hell, Joey Keane was drafted in the 3rd round this year and is in the lineup tomorrow. Give him the year in the AHL.... he clearly needs it if the mistakes he's making are that glaring that he's sent down already.

There are a lot of defensemen here currently ahead of him. Sending him down now relieves any pressure and let's him start the stage of his career we all knew he'd be on this season. And being drafted in the 3rd round shouldn't carry expectations no matter who you list. Duclair was't tendered. Buchnevich fell like a lot of Russians that have the KHL option. List all the third rounders that haven't made it. It will be about 80-90% of them?

A 20 year old who got into the CHL as one of a handful of 15 year olds, who originally projected as a 1st rounder, who then went in the 3rd round, who got sent back to the OHL last year rather than going to the AHL and now is one of a handful of cuts in the first round, is on the wrong career trajectory. While it's hard to call a 3rd round pick a bust, I would say that expectations for him making the NHL at this stage should be appropriately very low to non-existent.

![]() Legend Posts: 12890 ![]() Location: New Jersey | I just don't understand not giving him the experience. Play against NHL talent. Let him taste it a bit. Let alone Traverse City.... Lias Andersson didn't need to play in that. Understood that Day isn't making the team... there's 18 defenseman at the start of camp... He got cut before Joey Keane who was drafted two years after Day, and Crawley who was drafted 1 year after Day. Neither of them are making the team, either.... They'll see preseason hockey though... Like Fish said, the trajectory isn't pointing in the right direction. Hopefully he learns something in Hartford. He needs to start at least being in the conversation as a call up, at some point... or he's a bust. 3rd round or not, call it what you want. Part of the 80% that don't make it.

MVP Posts: 5662 ![]() | In junior hockey you see kids trying to make it. Some have a car load of talent and they can fool you with the expectation they are going to put it all together and be a player, until you realize they have no brain or heart or guts. Some have the ability to figure it out and put it all together and move onwards and upwards. The ones that don’t get weeded out. Not to many secrets on guys after playing at the junior and college level. Day is unique because his raw physical abilities lead to opinions and expectations that dwarf his mental game and compete attitude that are a must part of a NHL players game. In some ways his ability to get to pro hockey with so many obvious question marks is a testament to his skill level, lessor skilled players would have been already dumped. In its simplest form whats lacking is his minds ability to utilize the enormous physical ability he’s got. His talent which is incredible still gives one the hope he gets it together even though it’s more likely he ends up in the ECHL and it’s one and done this year, ending in a release or trade. Very very important year coming up for that kid. Unless he figures it out soon he won’t be around long.

While it's hard to call a 3rd round pick a bust, I would say that expectations for him making the NHL at this stage should be appropriately very low to non-existent. Again, you're still comparing him to expectations from 5 years ago. There are plenty of "projected for the first round" kids who fall to later rounds, 3 years later. A third rounder getting sent back to the OHL for an overage year, is not unusual at the least. I don't have high hopes for him making the NHL but I never really did. Forget that he's "Sean Day" for a minute and just realize that he's a third round pick, lots of talent but questions surrounding hockey IQ and work ethic, he's starting in the AHL as a 20 year old... none of that is unusual or immediate cause for concern. If anything, a third round pick getting to the AHL is actually already pretty decent value for where he was picked.

So we can assume one squad will play the Islanders on Saturday and The Devils Monday with cuts coming Tuesday? Maybe? This sounds reasonable. On the other hand, I could also see that they may want another look at a guy or two after the Islanders game and may play him for the Devils also. I mean I'm pretty sure Kreider is going to make the team, so it would be smart of them to use that preseason roster spot to better evaluate someone who is on the bubble.
