With the scoring chances piling up but the goals yet to come in waves, the biggest thing for the Rangers right now are all the little things.

"The scoring chances are there. There's always something within the scoring chance that we can do to make it a better scoring chance," David Quinn said as his Rangers prepared for a matchup with the Florida Panthers with Alexandar Georgiev in the nets on Tuesday night at the Garden. "We're doing an awful lot right. We're putting ourselves in great positions, we're just not finishing it off. There's always one thing that we don't do within the scoring chance that doesn't allow us to finish the chance.

The Rangers put up a season-high 45 shots on David Rittich's goal on Sunday against Calgary, including 20 in the third period, but came away with only one goal to show for it. It was the third time in eight games this season the Rangers have topped 40 shots, but the task in front of them now is to bridge that last divide and make some of their many chances pay off.

And so Monday's practice included drills focused on some of those fundamental details - feet moving, stop at the net, don't overhandle - that the Rangers' coaches feel could make the difference between picking up a greasy or a second-chance goal, or coming away empty.

"There's something we don't so that would allow the scoring chance to either be a better scoring chance - whether it's an A chance, could be a better A chance, which would end up in the back of the net, or a B chance that could become an A chance," Quinn said. "Whether it be not stopping at the net, one stickhandle before you shoot it, not being physical enough around the puck, half a step too slow off the wall - whatever it may be, there's always something within the scoring chance that we need to do better to capitalize."

Mika Zibanejad had four of the Rangers' 45 shots in Sunday's game, including the third-period power-play strike that brought the Rangers back into the game, Zibanejad's third goal in four games. His 35 shots are tied for seventh-most in the NHL, and the center said on Monday that he came into the season with a plan not only to shoot more, but to make sure his shots hit their target.

"The biggest thing for me was to come this year was to keep shooting," Zibanejad said. "I've been putting extra thought into it, just hit the net. I still miss the net, but I hit the net way more. … That's been a conscious decision to kind of really focus and really dial in when it comes to those points. And I play with such good players, they put me in situations where I feel like I need to shoot. It's a different mentality I guess.

He'll be playing with a new player on Tuesday, as Quinn will move Mats Zuccarello onto his right wing in place of Jesper Fast (who "can play on any line, his game doesn't change," Quinn said), with Chris Kreider remaining on his left. Quinn has used a different lineup in each of the Rangers' eight games this season.

"He's been such a good player for so long, every season he plays he's been the same," Zibanejad said of Zuccarello, who leads the Rangers with six assists. "It's a fun guy to play with - I played with him and Kreids a year and a half ago the last time. We had some success, we had some fun."

Down at the other end, Georgiev will take the nets for his second NHL start this season, after spending the weekend with the Hartford Wolf Pack to get in some game action. Georgiev made 25 saves in a victory in Belleville on Friday night, then followed that up with 32 stops in a loss to the defending Calder Cup champion Toronto Marlies as the Wolf Pack finished up a four-night stretch of three games in three Canadian cities.

With Roberto Luongo (knee) on injured reserve, Michael Hutchinson will get the nod over James Reimer to take his third start this season for a Panthers team that has a few things in common with the Rangers: namely, that they have been in every game they have played but are struggling to find ways to win them. The Panthers have just one win - Friday's shootout victory in Washington - out of their first six games this season, none of which has been decided by more than one goal. Four of their games have reached overtime, and three have gone to shootouts.

Tuesday's game is the first in the Panthers' two-week road trip that includes stops in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Newark and Helsinki for a pair of games against the Winnipeg Jets.

LINEUP FROM MONDAY'S PRACTICE

20 Kreider - 93 Zibanejad - 36 Zuccarello
72 Chytil - 13 Hayes - 17 Fast
26 Vesey - 21 Howden - 89 Buchnevich
8 McLeod - 90 Namestnikov - 23 Spooner
95 Lettieri

76 Skjei - 54 McQuaid
18 Staal - 44 Pionk
42 Smith - 22 Shattenkirk

*Note: Quinn announced that Freddy Claesson (upper body injury) would miss 2-3 weeks.

40 Georgiev
30 Lundqvist

NUMBERS GAME

Of the Panthers' 23 goals against this season, 14 have come in second periods, most in the NHL.

The Panthers have played six one-goal games this season; each of the last four meetings between the Rangers and Panthers have been decided by one goal, including all three last season, in which the Rangers went 1-1-1.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Zuccarello, the Rangers' assist leader (6) who will move onto the top line Tuesday night, has 21 points (10-11-21) in 20 career games against the Panthers.

Aleksander Barkov, who led Florida in scoring last season (78 points) and has six points through six games this year (2-4-6), has been looking forward to this road trip: He called it "a dream" to play for an NHL team in his native Finland.

Brooks had an interesting article, about trying to change the way certain players play...perhaps that's something that works more at the NCAA level than at the NHL level. I know many fans want the players to be different (e.g. be more physical, shoot more...be better skaters), but perhaps the reality is that the players are what they are by the time they reach the NHL, and it's more about how they fit in with the other players around them, and coaching really has only a limited effect. I think they certainly have the ability to implement a system that best suits the players, and they can perhaps motivate certain types of players, but ultimately you're constrained by the make up of your team.
