Adam Fox has declined to sign with Carolina, electing to return to Harvard for his senior season. This should make him UFA next summer.

Wonder what his favorite team growing up was?

Out with one fan boy (Shatty)

In with new fan boy (Fox)

Kid has the goods, though

Yeah, also much less risk involved if you sign a 22 year old kid on an ELC, versus a 30 year old defenseman to a multimillion dollar deal.

I didn't realize just how good Fox is doing. Kid had the most points per game in the league!

Great. So he can sign with us and be as useless as our other Harvard alumni.

“I know people think I have some plan to sign with the Rangers because of where I grew up,” the New York native said. “But my dream, my goal, is to play in the NHL. As soon as possible.”

Well the door's open now for him to sign with Carolina or force a trade to get on a roster ASAP. He has the opportunity to burn a year of his ELC which would put him a year closer to free agency so he better get on it

I do wonder what it would take to acquire his rights.

From Carolina's perspective, the longer they wait the worse it is for him, and if he goes back to Harvard for his senior season, they'll lose him next summer for nothing.

From Fox's perspective, my point with the above quote was that he wants to make the NHL as soon as possible, but that would actually mean signing with the Canes and burning a year of ELC. But he hasn't done that so is that really his priority? If he goes back to Harvard, it's looking pretty good for NYR to swoop in next summer, because he passed up an opportunity to play in the NHL with the Canes so he could get to UFA.

NYR are sitting pretty here, at this point they have some leverage because they can only stand to gain. Even if Fox signs soon in CAR or waits until next summer and signs elsewhere, NYR have not given anything up. No worse for the wear. So considering the position that Carolina is in, I wonder if they'd go for it if NYR sent them a second round pick, then signed Fox for this year and burned a year of his ELC. At that point it's a win-win-win, with Carolina saving a little face versus taking the risk that they get nothing for him next summer. Carolina is pretty deep with young defensemen also so they could afford to give up a little depth there.

Pretty interesting all around, even moreso to me that there's been no developments since Harvard was eliminated.

That report was from before his team was eliminated, he may still feel that way, but obviously you're not going to say you're not coming back next year, while you're still playing in the tournament.

Adam Fox is a RD

On the right side, Carolina has

Dougie Hamilton
Justin Faulk
Trevor Van Riemsdyk

Where does Adam Fox fit there?.... Especially for just a handful of games. He sees the log jam, and so does Carolina. So when he says his decision to become a free agent/not sign the ELC/plan to return as a Senior... that's what he's saying.

There isn't a spot open in Carolina right now, and he doesn't want to wait around for The Canes to figure it out and cater to him.

His plan isn't to be a Ranger, it's to be a NHLer.... coincidence and fate may have it that New York will provide the best opportunity for him... The Rangers aren't quite as deep at the RD position. He could viably step in and get big boy minutes in NY

Not sure that path is there for him many other places. He's a fit here.

Coincidentally childhood dreams would also come true. He can pretend it wouldn't tip the scale in The Rangers' favor, but....

By all accounts, Fox should develop into a top-four NHL blueliner although I got some differing views of him on Thursday.

“I guess the question marks would be about his ability to defend,’’ said one NHL scout via text message. “He can run a PP. Offensive D-men are hard to find!’’

Said a rival Eastern Conference NHL team executive: “Above average puck skills. Really smart, terrific vision. Sub six-footer with modest speed and quickness. His size/speed ratio really bothers me. Drives a lot of production on the PP but I don’t see him being a major PP guy in our league.’’

From a Western Conference team exec: “There’s no question he’s a skilled guy. He’s undersized but full of offensive skill. Not a great skater but good instincts. How will that translate to the NHL?’’

And finally, from our prospects guru Corey Pronman:

“He’s an elite puck-mover,” Pronman told me on Thursday. “Outstanding vision, patience, overall offensive IQ. Prototypical PP QB. Concerns over his size and average feet in terms of how well he defends in the NHL. I don’t think he’s a star prospect but he could be a useful second pair D.’’

Hearing that the Hurricanes have been informed Adam Fox isn't likely to sign with them, that a trade would be the desired route, and I'm guessing the Rangers would top the d-man's list. Carolina looking at its options...

Obviously would be better for Fox to have the trade happen sooner than later so he can sign and burn first year of entry-level deal. On other hand, the 'Canes have to do what's right for them. Trading him soon or waiting until summer?
