So we have to sign Trouba...My guess is he is going to get morth of $7M per.

That will eat up all of the cap we have remaining and maybe then some.

Then what?

Shattenkirk has an NMC and nobody wants him.

Do you let Buch walk?

You can waive and or assign Names and B Smith

gives us plenty to sign Trouba, Lemiuex and Tony D.

Am I missing something? Some banana peels for Shattenkirk?

Not sure. I'd try trades even if I had to eat contract or give up some assets(just nothing major) I'm against buyouts, though if they have to go that way Smith or Staal would have to be the ones on defense. Shatt's hit is to big next year. It would be over $5 million.

It's a slight overpay but I'd rather overpay for a 25 year old first pair defenseman than pay $1m to a fourth line journeyman tough guy.

It's a good deal for the Rangers. That's the cost of your go to guy, if he's not a go yo guy then it's a overpay and it's on the Rangers braintrust. Unfortunately the Rangers have a terrible record handing out big contracts to new defensemen, or acquiring overpaid ones.
It was the one thing Gorton undoubtably wanted tied down before the rest of the dominoes fall.

Only thing is now there is negative leverage in ANY trade for a Names, Strome, Kreider, Buch etc.

We didn’t have much at all before, but with the cap all gone...NEGATIVE leverage...if Names was moved prior to the signing we probably get more in return for our future trades if indeed we make them.

I’d like Buch & Strome to stay & we move Names and buyout Shatt and burry Smith
I’d like Kreider to stay but not for $7+...However, do you really think Kreider won’t be a 60+ point guy playing with Zib & Panarin if healthy?

I'm sorry but I'm not buying this. You're saying all of us fans know this but all the NHL GMs didn't? Once they signed Panarin everyone knew the Rangers had to make trades or buy guys out to become compliant. With a hearing date the pressure was there. Now the date is gone and the pressure is actually relieved a bit because the Rangers have buyout options. July 25th means nothing now. Buying out Shatt is a horrible idea. His hit next season goes up to $5+ million. Almost anything you can do to trade him is a better idea. Staal is a much better buyout candidate but even that won't be enough. They have to make multiple moves.

There’s little chance Shattenkirk is moved this offseason.

It’s a fact they could have gotten more for there potential tradeable players if they made those trades earlier in the offseason. Personally I think Names is gonna be a salary dump to a decent team and that’s really it.

You’re clearly right about the Panarin situation. However, if they move 1/2 guys before the Trouba signing...they have slightly more leverage for gaining better assets, not much but some.

I also think more than I think he is worth, but young D-men will cost $$$. He still has room to improve.

I think he got what the going rate is as that has been rapidly escalating every year. You can not compare his contract to one signed two years ago by who you assume is a comparable player. It's very hard if not impossible to compare any two players unless your just looking at stats. And stats are not the only criteria GM's use to establish contract value. Intangibles with no measuring stick, only appreciation by team members and management are a significant part of a contract negotiation. Trouba brings a ton of intangibles along with excellent stats. He's the best Ranger defenseman by a mile.

Opposing teams are not going to turn down a deal that helps their team. It's up to Gorton to make an attractive option for a team to acquire anyone of the rumoured players the Rangers will move. Theres been a lot worse contracts moved than Shattenkirk and Smith. I believe the Rangers want to move their weakest link which is Shattenkirk. And until Gorton exhausts all Shattenkirk and Smith's movement possibilities no one else is going anywhere.
