RANGERS (8-6-2) at LIGHTNING (8-5-2)

7 p.m. ET; ESPN+, SNE, SNO, SNP. TVAS, SUN, MSG, NHL.TV

The Game

The Tampa Bay Lightning will play their first game since the 2019 NHL Global Series in Stockholm, Sweden when they face the New York Rangers at Amalie Arena on Thursday.

The Lightning swept the two games against the Buffalo Sabres and play at home for the first time since Oct. 26. Sixteen of their next 22 games are on home ice.

The Rangers are 5-1-1 in their past seven games, including a 4-1 win against the Lightning at Madison Square Garden on Oct. 29.

Players to watch

Lightning center Steven Stamkosneeds two goals to reach 400 in the NHL. He has seven points (four goals, three assists) in his past four games against the Rangers.

Rangers forward Artemi Panarin has 13 points (four goals, nine assists) in a nine-game point streak.

They said it

"I think the way that we played structured hockey, skating for one another, played physical. It makes it kind of easy on the entire group when everyone's doing their job to the best of their abilities. We had a detailed game. We're going to need to play the same way if we want to come out of here with a win." -- Rangers forward Chris Kreider

"It's easy for us to say that we've come off this long road trip and the first game is always tough. That's an excuse. I think we're itching to play now. We haven't played for a few days. We had a couple days off to get some rest." -- Lightning center Steven Stamkos

Rangers projected lineup

Yup. He should be out there every night. Sending him to Hartford was nonsense.

I'll keep saying the same thing, the D sucks, team D sucks so unless you are the 80s Oils or 90s Wings, & you are not, you better learn to play better D.

Well tonight everything sucked. No offense (until it didn't matter obviously) no defense and no goaltending. When you end up finishing the game with the starter you pulled and your coach isn't Mike Keenan....They are inconsistent and it's not unexpected, but this one just got away from them. It seems like they let a bad call and George not having a good night get to them and let it get out of control. They flat out didn't know how to stop it. The coach needed to step in and did nothing but watch them crash and burn.

That's one you flush down the toilet, without reading to much into it. They had the proverbial off night. Stories today a flu bug going through the team and a pissed off Tampa team and it is, what it was. A good old fashioned **** kicking, by a superior veteran club, on a very young team. Learn what you can from it and move on.

Howden fukkkkking sucks. He has no clue how to kill penalties. Everything he does sucks. When your loser coach puts a career schmuck in McKegg on the 4th line instead of Andersson, he's not long for coaching this team.

I think this was not Quinn's fault. He had a short bench due to penalties and quite possibly guys with less flu than Kakko on the ice. Throw in some soft calls against the Rangers and the TB power play had a party.

The middle of the ice continues to be wide open in front of the Ranger goalies and this leads to high quality shots/goals and that is on Quinn.

Tampa is a veteran team loaded with offensive talent. Chalk this one up to another learning experience. Tampa and Boston are the elite teams in the East along with maybe Washington. The Rangers are not ready to consistently compete on their level. Yet.

I like that Quinn finally went after the refs who are just awful. He needs to go full-on Lou Piniella one game. Just for effect.

I like that Lemieux was in people's faces all game. I like Lindgren's game and his confidence is growing. I like that Chytil is continuing his offensive development, he needs to be a bit better defensively.

As bad as it was, it's only one loss. They need to get better with weak side coverage, covering the trailer on rushes against, and their faceoffs are still very bad. Work in progress, but at least this time it's with 21 to 25 year olds and not free agent mercenaries in their 30's.

Metrics actually show Chytil as our best defensive forward after Fast.
