HURRICANES (22-13-2) at RANGERS (17-15-4)

7 p.m. ET; MSG, FS-CR, NHL.TV

The Game

The Carolina Hurricanes will look for their first win in three games when they play the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden on Friday.

The Hurricanes were 6-0-1 in seven games prior to losing 4-2 to the Florida Panthers on Dec. 21 and 8-6 to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Dec. 23.

The Rangers have won each game against the Hurricanes this season, including 3-2 at home on Nov. 27. New York lost to the Philadelphia Flyers 5-1 on Monday and is 1-3-1 in its past five games.

Henrik Lundqvist will make his third consecutive start. It's the first time the Rangers goalie has started as many as three games in a row since Nov. 25-29. He has allowed four goals on 90 shots (.956 save percentage) in two starts against Carolina this season.

Players to watch

Hurricanes forward Teuvo Teravainen has six assists in a five-game point streak.

Rangers center Mika Zibanejad has nine points (five goals, four assists) in the past six games.

They said it

"I think the strength of their team is that they've had good goaltending. They've got some high-end defensive and offensive players and it allows them to play their game. We're going to have to find a way to get a few by [Lundqvist]." -- Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour

"We're in games and that's a good thing. You want to win, and we've shown that we can win games in different ways. I think we have to just keep being on that stuff that we have to do and really stick to the way we play and the way we do things when we win and play well. If we keep progressing, I think we're going to see good results." -- Rangers center Mika Zibanejad

Given the Rangers current form, this might be a tough couple of games tonight and tomorrow in Toronto

They have to split. Games slipping away has to stop.

Skjei with a bonehead unforced attempted clear. Team is not going anywhere with him in the long term plans.

He may find himself unprotected in the Seattle entry draft. There are more important pieces to the rebuild that will be on the list.

... and Skjei jumps into the play and flubs a great chance by not shooting, leads to a rush against. He's not playing smart so far.

Rookie mistakes that we will just have to deal with. Fox was trying to transition and flip it off the boards and sent it into the seats. Just as the Rangers were getting momentum after a good PK. They can skate with the Canes but giving the Canes PP chances is gonna kill them.

Any consistency he has leans towards consistently not very good.

Cheap call against the Canes for interference off the faceoff. We'll take it. ..... and Zibs hammers it home!

Trouba gets away with some amateur dentistry on Wallmark. Really gave him one in the chops, no call. Still picking splinyters from his teeth.

Shaky start, but the Rangers looked good in the last half of the period. They have confidence against the Canes and it shows.

Refs dishing out cheap stick taps and tugs, yet miss a tomahawk chop to the teeth by Trouba. Typical NHL refs, ****ty as usual.

Rangers have to start knocking people down near Henrik. Too many guys standing there and swiping at the puck.

Canes starting to get frustrated. The Rangers can skate with them and are transitioning better than they are. They're getting chippy and that is not their game. Rangers can blow them out tonight because they're gonna get PPs and chances off the rush.

Kreider and Zib have some mojo going. Them on one line and Panarin and Strome with their chemistry on another, Kappo, Chytil and Lemieux on a third line and your starting to see a lineup that can compete.

For my mind Brendan Smith was partly to blame...he didn’t really give Skjei anyone to pass to as he was being pressured on his backhand, so Skjei tried to clear up the boards where Smith should have been
