Not a surprise.
The Post has learned that the Blueshirts are expected to announce the buyout of the King, thus ending one of the most storied and celebrated careers in franchise history.

This is the only realistic move for the Rangers. Sad to see Hanks superb career as a Ranger come to an end.

This is a SAD day.. but one that had to be obvious... with the goalies out there... and the money to spend .. the market was not great... and so even moving him would have been tough.... EVEN if he wanted to move. So baring him retiring and playing the final 1-4 seasons in Europe this was the ONLY way to make things happen. I am sad to see one of the greatest all time Rangers go and that this is how he does it..

BUT

My hope is he then gets signed to be the back up with a team who can win a cup. I would be happy to see him on a team winning the cup next year.

The single best reason to watch the Rangers the last 15 years. I usually don't get emotional or follow individual players, but this is Leetch level Rangers player. 1 of the greatest Rangers, 1 of the greatest goalies of all-time, HofF 1st year of eligibility, # retired, no cup too bad, but does not take away from Hank, never had the team in front of him to go all the way. Started watching Rangers hockey in '81, my 2nd fav Ranger ever.

Excellent list although I’d nudge Leetch just ahead of Messier being homegrown and time spent in the uniform.

999. (cup winner ha ha) Kevin Shattenkirk

Glad I got to see McDonagh raise the cup, and NBC cut the feed by the time it was Shattenkirk's turn. Shatt is a mediocre dman, with some offensive upside. He was 5th on Tampa for TOI per game, and last for TOI on the PK. Same category as Rozsival. Both lucky, got on the right teams at the right time.

But back to Hank, one of my top 5 all-time Rangers. This truly marks the end of an era in our history. The post-lockout Rangers that were a very good competitive team, mostly because of Hank.

I watched the tournament and although Shattenkirk did add some hilites to the effort he was pretty much a pylon defensively

Yes it is an end of an era for sure... It was also sad over the last couple or three seasons to watch Henk's skills diminish. The one disappointment I always had with Henk was his lack of skill playing the puck which would make my cheeks clench every time he had the puck on his stick. I always wondered why he couldn't work to improve that skill in the off season. Was that really something he couldn't have gotten better at? Apparently not.

Exactly, him touching the puck was always a nail bitting moment and opposing teams knew that... also his glove hand on high shots early on in his career... with that said he was still good enough to win 2-3 cups... and probably would’ve with a handful of teams with better support.

Shattenkirk gets kudos for coming to the Rangers for less money and trying to play (tough but stupid) though an injury. After watching him play this season, he was clearly not fully recovered last year with the Rangers. He was never a defensive wizard and it got way worse with the knee injury. He still played 18:54 min per game for TB - pretty substantial for a '3rd pair' guy. He also played all 70 games. He played well in the playoffs this season.

Funny thing about that....I recall reading somewhere that Giacomin offered to work with Henrik on his stickhandling and Rangers management turned him down....always thought that was strange...but then again, strange was the norm when Stogie Man was making the calls.

This is exactly where you can see how great competitor he was.

His puck handling skills were horrible when he joined the league.
He managed to make it subpar.
The glove....even more remarkable as it was a known weakness his first few seasons.
But he worked hard on it, changed his style a bit and it was no longer weakness.

Hank is one of my all time favorites. My mind understands the buy-out.
But on an irrational level, I completely hate to see him go like this.

Hank has more in the tank. his perfect fit is with a team that is up and coming and has a good young goalie where he can play 25 games and help them and take over the starter where if the kid has trouble. I think two teams that jump to mind for me is Colorado with Grubauer. Backing him up and maybe even splitting time would be good for that team. I also think with Jake Allen moving on he could fit in with St Louis. Both teams could use his veteran presence and could also help out young goalies. AND if there is an injury or the kids underperform. Hank could step in and being fresher not having to carry 60 games he could take them on a run. I think him in net with Colorado this past playoffs they get further. no doubt.

Hank was always at his best when he played almost every game. I don't think he'd succeed as backup. Or that he'd shine after being no. 2 for majority of the season.
