Defenseman Fedor Tyutin is heading to Columbus in exchange for Nikolai Zherdev |
Wednesday July 2nd, 2008 - By The OTG Staff
After day one of the 2008 Free Agent period, the Rangers were set on defense, but had significant holes on their top two lines. On day two GM Glen Sather made an attempt to rectify that, dealing defensemen Fedor Tyutin and Christian Backman to the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for Nikolai Zherdev and Dan Fritsche.
Zherdev, a 24 year old right wing who is playing on the last year of a three year contract that has a cap hit of $2.5M, instantly provides the Rangers with a credible scoring threat on the top line. In 82 games with the Blue Jackets last year, the Ukrainian born winger picked up 26 goals and 61 points, the second time in his four seasons in the NHL that he's scored 25+ goals....more

Day two of the 2008 free agency frenzy is under way, and so far no more big signings to report, which of course gives us plenty of time to review the stories from yesterday.
Wade Redden of course was the biggest signing for the Rangers yesterday, and he seems ready to go. The career Senator is set to play for just the second team in the NHL.
The Hockey News sees him as a good mentor for the younger Ranger defenders (though how many they end up keeping remains to be seen).
Like us, Larry Brooks takes issue with the size of the contracts for Redden and Michal Rozsival (who was also re-signed), or more specifically the position it puts the team in.
Undoubtedly Glen Sather was overreacting to not getting a top line defender last year, and so ensured that his defense was set first. Defenders have commanded a premium since the lockout, and Sather looked to be negotiating with several before securing Redden and coming back to Rozsival.
There is still of course a gaping hole at forward, with the Rangers holding somewhere between $8-11M (depending who you slot into the remaining open spots) to add some depth there.
One player who likely won't be back is Sean Avery. Avery appears to be talking to Dallas where he has connections with former fellow team mate (and now co-GM) Brett Hull.
As a side note, aside from the re-signing of Michal Rozsival and Stephen Valiquette, no other Ranger free agents have been signed yet.

It doesn't pay to go out at this time of the year, but I had to...and while I was out, the Rangers hold a conference announcing the signings of Markus Naslund (2 years - $8M) and Dmitri Kalinin (1 year).
They also officially announced that Martin Straka will not be coming back...and nor apparently, will Jaromir Jagr.
Brendan Shanahan remains an option for the Rangers if they want to add some more depth on the wings.
The Rangers also apparently have an offer on the table to Paul Mara.
You can read updates at Steve Zipay's blog.

Would the Rangers be interested in Martin Havlat? According to Steve Zipay's blog the Blackhawks are shopping around for interest, including from the Rangers.
Chicago is currently over their salary cap, and have reportedly being trying to trade Khabibulin to Los Angeles (though that deal may have fallen through).
Havlat's has one year remaining at $6M, but has been incredibly injury prone.
Thursday - July 3rd

The Rangers apparently had a five year deal on the table for Pittsburgh defender Brooks Orpik but Orpik re-signed with the Penguins for less money.
John Dellapina goes on to say in his blog that the Rangers were in on the bidding for Kristian Huselius (who ended up signing with the Blue Jackets) and Canucks winger Markus Naslund.
Sam Weinman is reporting in his blog that the Rangers are still in the running for Jaromir Jagr, though after various reports today and yesterday, it appears that Edmonton has the largest offer on the table.

One of our readers just reported hearing Glen Sather that Jaromir Jagr will be signing with Edmonton. The report apparently comes from MSG.

Sam Weinman is reporting in his blog that Glen Sather is still looking at defensemen, but played coy about the future of Jaromir Jagr as a Ranger.
