CENTER |
LOCKS: |
Chris Drury, Brandon Dubinsky, Scott Gomez |
BUBBLE: |
Artem Anisimov, Blair Betts, Petr Nedved, Pat Rissmiller |
MINORS: |
Joe Barnes (ECHL/AHL), Chris Doyle (QMJHL), Evgeny Gravchev (OHL), Mike Ouellette (ECHL/AHL), Tom Pyatt (ECHL/AHL), Tomas Zaborsky (ECHL/AHL) |
The Rangers look pretty set at center, but there's an outside possibility that Blair Betts gets unseated on the fourth line. Petr Nedved is in camp attempting to win a spot, but will likely find the going tought. Rissmiller likewise was
probably brought in to challenge Betts for that final center spot, or may find a spot as a depth forward. A real wild card is Artem Anisimov, who has drawn praise from the Rangers staff, but is likely to find his way blocked by the veterans in front of him.
Of the remainder, it looks like there will be a modest battle to see who gets to stay in Hartford, and who goes down to Charlotte. Pyatt and Ouellette both split time last season, but have AHL experience, while Barnes has to stay healthy to be considered. |
|
LEFT WING |
LOCKS: |
Nigel Dawes, Markus Naslund, Petr Prucha |
BUBBLE: |
Dane Byers, Lauri Korpikoski, Aaron Voros, Fredrik Sjostrom |
MINORS: |
Sergei Demagin (?), Brodie Dupont (AHL), Ryan Hillier (ECHL/AHL), Jordan Owens (ECHL/AHL), Justin Soryal (ECHL/AHL), Mike Taylor (ECHL/AHL) |
There appears to be a spot open on the left wing, though one would think that Aaron Voros or Fredrik Sjostrom might have the inside track given his contract status. Lauri Korpikoski might get a chance to compete if the Rangers are looking for
speed, whilst Byers brings more grit. Down in the AHL Dupont probably has a spot, while the remaining players will compete to see who fills out the Pack roster. |
|
RIGHT WING |
LOCKS: |
Ryan Callahan, Colton Orr, Nikolai Zherdev |
BUBBLE: |
Dan Fritsche, Andreas Jamtin, Hugh Jessiman, Greg Moore, P.A. Parenteau |
MINORS: |
Matt Metropoulis (?), David Skokan (ECHL/AHL), Dale Weise (ECHL/AHL) |
At least three spots appear to be sewn up, with Dan Fritsche likely with the inside track on the final one. The competition is relatively weak, so it's hard to see how any of the others could make the roster without having a stunning camp. |
|
DEFENSE |
LOCKS: |
Dan Girardi, Dmitri Kalinin, Paul Mara, Wade Redden, Michael Rozsival |
BUBBLE: |
Brian Fahey, Maxim Kondratiev, Thomas Pock, Corey Potter, Bobby Sanguinetti |
MINORS: |
Michael Busto (ECHL), Michael Del Zotto (OHL), Vladimir Denisov (AHL), Tysen Dowzak (ECHL/AHL), Tomas Kundratek (WHL), Lyon Messier (?), Chris Murray (ECHL/AHL), Nick Pageau (?), Michael Sauer (AHL), David Stich (?), David Urquhard (ECHL/AHL) |
The starting six defensemen look pretty much set for the Rangers, it looks like a more heated battle for who gets to be the depth guy. Thomas Pock perhaps has the inside track, having had the most NHL experience of any of the candidates, though
Kondratiev (in town on a try-out basis) might have a shot. Others who might press for that seventh d-man spot include Fahey, Potter and an outside chance of Sanguinetti.
The rest of the attendees look destined for the AHL/ECHL with a couple of prospects set to play in Canadian Juniors. The remainder will playing for the chance to get a pro contract, likely with the Wolf Pack. |
|
GOALTENDING |
LOCKS: |
Henrik Lundqvist, Stephen Valiquette |
BUBBLE: |
N/A |
MINORS: |
Mike Brodeur (ECHL/AHL), Antoine LaFleur (QMJHL), Miika Wiikman (AHL), Matt Zaba (ECHL/AHL) |
Lundqvist has the start position sewn up, and Valiquette will be the man to back him up. The only real question appears to be who will backup Wiikman in Hartford. Mike Brodeur has signed an AHL contract and will likely compete with Zaba for that
second spot. |
