► RUMOR MILL
|
Friday - February 24th
So it appears the Rangers and Blackhawks are heading to a trade for Kane. Given the most likely path to freeing up money, we should see Jake Leschyshyn on waivers today, which would allow for a trade on March 3rd.
Multiple reports suggest that the Blackhawks have come down on their asking price, with Kane said to have pushed hard for a move to New York.

Projected Forwards
- First Line |
 |
 |
 |
Chris Kreider |
Derek Stepan |
Rick Nash |
We projected this line to start the season last
year, but Chris Kreider ended up getting sent down. This time
around it seems likely that these three will be fronting up as the
Rangers' "top" line, with all three set to improve on last year's
numbers.
Starting on the left, will be Chris Kreider. The
young left winger bounced back after he failed to back up his stunning
entry into the NHL playoffs with regular season success. Last
year with 17 goals in 63 games, and would be expected to break the 20
goal mark for the first time in his career.
In the center, Derek
Stepan will be in camp on time after missing the start last year due to
contract issues. The 24 year old Minnesotan did set a career high
of 57 points last year, but was well off the pace of the lockout
shortened season where he had 44 points in 48 games. A full camp
should help him get off to a better start.
Rounding out the line
will be Rick Nash, who is coming off a sub-par playoff performance
where he recorded just 3 goals in 24 games, and matched his career low
in points - 39, which he set back in 2002-03 during his rookie season.
Nash did suffer a concussion early on in the season, and Rangers
faithful will be hoping that that was the cause for his lackluster
performance. |
|
Projected Forwards
- Second Line |
 |
 |
 |
Carl Hagelin |
Derrick Brassard |
Martin St. Louis |
The Rangers second line will be a bit of
mystery going into camp, although on paper this looks like the most
likely combination. With Brad Richards having been bought out in
the off-season, Derrick Brassard will move up to the second line center
position.
The 27 year old center set a career high of 18 goals
during the regular season last year, centering Mats Zuccarello and
Benoit Pouliot for much of the year. His 45 points, were two
short of his career high, and he ended up with another 12 points - 6G,
6A, in the playoffs. It'll be a step up for Brassard, who'll be
called upon to increase his offensive output, especially with the
speedy Carl Hagelin and veteran Martin St. Louis on his wings.
As for Hagelin, he returns to camp healthy this year, after missing the
start of last season following off-season surgery on a troublesome
shoulder. The fast skating Swede ended up scoring a career high
17 goals - in his third season, and would be another possible candidate
for 20 goals this year, although that will be hard without powerplay
time.
On the other side, 39 year old Martin St. Louis took some
time to adjust to playing with the Rangers, scoring in his 14th game
with the team, and finishing with just one goal in 19 regular season
games. He did turn it up in the playoffs though, with 8 goals,
just two short of his career high set in 2010-11 with the Lightning.

|
Projected Forwards
- Third Line |
 |
 |
 |
Kevin Hayes |
J.T. Miller |
Mats Zuccarello |
Is J.T. Miller ready to step up and be a center?
The Rangers will be hoping so, after showing moments of promise amid an
up and down season. Miller will likely get pushed hard by veteran
Dominic Moore, European returnee Matthew Lombardi, and rookie Oscar Lindberg, but his offensive potential
could see him get the not over the others. The key will be whether he
has matured on and off the ice, and whether Lombardi can show an
offensive touch after playing in Switzerland last season.
On the right side,
Mats Zuccarello will find himself again playing on the third line.
The Norwegian born winger really came of age last year, after a strong
playoff performance in 2013. He could see some time on the top two
lines if any of the other falter - or are injured, but looks most like
to start the year anchoring the third.
The biggest battle looks
likely to be who lines up on the left wing spot. It's possible
they could bring in right winger Lee Stempniak and move either he or
Zuccarello to the left, or they could go with aging Ryan Malone, a late
summer signing. While Stempniak and Malone appear to be "safe"
albeit middling options, we think Kevin Hayes might surprise and snatch
a spot ahead of the two.
It'll take a big camp by the UFA rookie
to push past the two veterans, but if there's a spot to be had, this
appears the most likely. Jesper Fast may also get a look in here,
though we're expecting him to be a late camp cut, along with the
intriguing Anthony Duclair. |
|
Projected Forwards
- Fourth Line |
 |
 |
 |
Tanner Glass |
Dominic Moore |
Lee Stempniak |
Dominic Moore returned to the NHL last season
after a one year hiatus following the death of his wife, and proved a
useful commodity to the team that drafted him. The likeable
veteran signed up for two more years, and looks set to earn either a
third or fourth line spot out of camp.
Pairing up with Moore will
likely be veteran players, and we're projecting Tanner Glass and Lee
Stempniak as being the likely options, although Ryan Malone could win
either position. Glass provides some PK ability too, and is a
familiar face to the Rangers coaching staff, and will likely get the
benefit of the doubt to start the year unless he has an awful camp.
Malone and Stempniak will be battling out for the final forward spot
if Hayes, Lombardi or Lindberg seriously enter the mix. |
|
Projected Forwards:
Reserves |
 |
 |
|
Ryan Malone |
Matthew Lombardi |
|
There are a number of permutations on the second
through third lines, but Malone and Lombardi look to be the two forwards
most likely battling for the reserve spots, if in fact the Rangers do
decide to carry two spare forwards. The remaining forwards seem
likely to be sent down, if for no other reason than to protect the
Rangers depth.
Hartford: Chris Bourque Ryan Bourque
Nathan Burns Jesper Fast
Ryan Haggerty Marek Hrivik Danny Kristo Nicklas Latta Paxton
Leroux Oscar Lindberg Brandon Mashinter

|
Projected Defense -
1st Pair |
 |
 |
Ryan McDonagh |
Dan Girardi |
No change on the top defensive pair, with Ryan
McDonagh and Dan Girardi looking set for a third straight year going
into camp. Only an injury would see these two being broken up at
this stage. |
|
Projected Defense -
2nd Pair |
 |
 |
Marc Staal |
Dan Boyle |
Marc Staal enters the last year of his
contract, and will become a UFA unless the Rangers can figure something
out. If he gets off to a good start, expect a contract extension
in January, when his raise won't impact the 2014-15 season.
Another injury, or a drop in form could see him moved or simply allowed
to walk. No doubt where he'll be to start the year though.
Joining Staal will be 38 year old free agent Dan Boyle. The
former Shark rejoins team mate Martin St, Louis in a bid to help a
Rangers power play that still has struggled despite a coaching change.
Boyle will be seen to be the answer to that problem, though it remains
to be seen how effective he can be this late in his career, and his
defense will certainly be examined closely. |
|
Projected Defense - 3rd Pair |
 |
 |
John Moore |
Kevin Klein |
John Moore has the distinction to be the last RFA to sign this summer,
but with the announcement of an agreement last week, the Rangers will
go into camp without any contract concerns for a change. Joining
Moore will be Kevin Klein, who joined the team mid-season last year
following a trade of Michael Del Zotto to the Nashville Predators.
The pair played together last year with mixed results, and will
both be looking to step up their performances knowing that they are
likely to be the third pairing to start the year. |
|
Projected Defense -
Reserves |
 |
|
Matt Hunwick |
|
If the Rangers elect to keep a veteran defender
up on the roster - which seems likely - it would appears Matt Hunwick
is the most likely option. Glen Sather did sign a number of
options on borderline NHL defenders over the off-season, and also has
prospects Connor Allen and Dylan McIlrath in the mix, but they will
likely start the year in the minors, and will serve as call-ups in case
of the inevitable injuries.
Hartford: Connor Allen Tommy Hughes
Steve Kampfer Mike Kostka Dylan McIlrath Samuel Noreau Dallas Valentine
Peter Zamorsky
Greenville:
Matt Bodie Troy Donnay
CHL: Ryan Graves Daniel Walcott
NCAA: Ryan Mantha

|
Projected Goaltending |
 |
 |
Henrik Lundqvist |
Cam Talbot |
Henrik Lundqvist will lead the Rangers in the net, and it'll be Cam
Talbot the projected backup. Talbot opened some eyes in camp last
year, and ultimately took away the backup spot from Martin Biron, who
retired after a slow start to the season.
Free agent signing
Cedric Desjardins appears to be heading to Hartford, with Jason
Missiaen and Jeff Malcolm likely battling out for the second spot.
Brandon Halverson and Mackenzie Skapski will return to their respective
CHL teams.
