Maybe Drury is serious about working with Kakko, a good deal for both. Kakko has a lot to play for this year. Another below expectation year and he’s going to be a under $1,000,000 per year guy

Still trade him... Too soft... Blocks a roster sport for someone at least as good who will be paid 1/3 of the cost

Good luck finding a $800,000 guy with 18 goals 40 points two years ago and even his 13 goals this year including a significant injury. And obvious untapped talent. Plenty of time to trade him next trade deadline if it doesn’t work out.

Apparently it's Kakko accepting his qualifying offer, so wouldn't read too much into it, other than he remains under the Rangers control and could easily be dealt if the Rangers want to go that route

Drury was pretty public about not trading him. So I guess we see.

The best way to destroy any trade alue the guy has left would be for Drury to say we want to trade him because it's just not working out here in NY.

He put up 19 points last year and appears to have regressed. He is not gritty at all which is what the Rangers need and could easily be replaced by Othmann and this move if he is not traded will block Othmann. Can't keep doing the same things expecting different results. He should go back to Europe except he is to soft to play in Finland... I have never seen a softer Fin.

Most G.M's have to have a minimal level of intelligence, and some integrity. He didn't have to say ANYTHING. He publicly stated we are not trading him and we are going to further develop him. He would open himself up to all sorts of criticism and judgement if he does. Especially since teams will be lining up for his services based on a low cost.

Kakko is not the reason the Rangers lost to Florida in what was the real Stanley Cup final. 19 points in a season with a major injury then rehabbing and getting back in the lineup doesn't mean you are 100%. His new one year salary is not out of whack with being a guy who can play up and down the lineup.  Makes me laugh when I hear of all his opportunities on a scoring line considering its only been with Kreider and Zibanejad, where no one succeeds. Its no secret his best season was with Lafreniere, and Chytill, probably because they are the best most skilled players he has spent any time with. He had some flashes last season and was more physical than previous seasons, improving in that regard like a lot of young players.  See Lafreniere very little physicality till this year.  Has Kakko progressed as fast as I would like? Nope but he did progress. Numerous people on here calling for Lafreniere to get traded last summer for whatever the Rangers could get. A little patience went a long way on that. Kappo has high end talent, if he gets some help and figures it out the Rangers have another game breaker.  The high end talent and high end physical skills are obvious. Little doubt he is on his last Ranger contract, so if he gets that coaching, he better figure it out this upcoming season.

Develop what? The only skill I see he has is holding on to the puck too long. He doesn't get open for shots offensively, he is ok defensively, he doesn't play special teams, and his lack of production is unsustainable. Now he is cheap but I would prefer the Rangers move on from him.... The only argument I can make for keeping him is that he is cheap and that you won't get much for him.

From Brooks today:

How Rangers are approaching critical Jacob Trouba decision (nypost.com)

There are, however, multiple indications that Kaapo Kakko’s one-year, $2.4 million deal signed a couple of weeks ago was in fact a trade proxy, with the Blueshirts aggressively shopping the 23-year-old Finn.

This is sort of a sell-low scenario but sources report that Drury is also attempting to use Kakko in conjunction with the club’s own 30th-overall selection to move up in the first round.

Seems to be a lot of talk about this.
