1 year left @ $5M - PIT retaining $1.25M

For a 2nd and a 5th round pick (likely some years out on the 2nd)

OK we just cleared $5m for Pissburgh

If they need me to bleed, then I'll bleed for my team

That was my first reaction...then I thought, does it really matter?  They have bigger issues than just cap space.

Apparently Pittsburgh is going to retain $1.25M.  The conditional 5th will be the worse of the NYR or MIN picks (acquired in Reaves trade).

I'm concerned Drury might have pooped on his own head with his Goodrow mess. Agents talk and Drury may have blackballed himself.

It's possible, though I believe this was the threat that was delivered to McDonagh when he was sent to Nashville...and Vegas has done a bunch of unholy things.  I think it's more likely that it's a combination of players choosing different situations whether it be the style/cost of living, taxes, opportunity on the team and what Drury is willing to offer up.

With next Summer needing new contracts for Lafreniere, Miller and Shesterkin...as well as replacing/extending Quick, Jones, Kakko and a handful of others.  If he'd been able to move Trouba already, he might also have been able to be a little more aggressive, but that hasn't panned out of course.

Couple of other points...

Reilly Smith will cost the NYR 1.25M less than Wennberg, and he won't cost another $5M next year.  His salary (after retention), will come in just $108,333 more than what the NYR were paying Goodrow

Smith is not bad. He will help more than Wennberg or Roslovic ever would have. Spent time on  Vegas’s top line. Competes. I don’t mind this pickup, fills a need at a reasonable short term cost. Obviously tradeable, so see how things shake out at training camp. Drury didn’t blow all his marbles which is a good thing. Just needs to clean up his Trouba mess and find another warrior type third pair dman.
