With the CBA set to expire tonight, the Ranger made sure they’d retain the services of their 2003 2nd round pick, Ivan Baranka, signing him to what is most likely a three year entry level contract. The Slovak defenseman, drafted after an impressive performance in the 2003 World Juniors came to North America last year and has been playing with the expansion Everett Silvertips of the WHL.
Under the tutelage of former Pittsburgh Penguins coach Kevin Constantine, the Silvertips were a surprise package in the WHL finals and Baranka was a key part of that success. A two-way defenseman who is not afraid to use his body, Baranka is one of the more promising defensive prospects in the Rangers system
OTG’s Take:
Despite signing a professional contract, Baranka almost certainly will suit up this year for Everett once again. The expectation is that he will be ready for duty in the AHL next year and after a year or two in the minor leagues will be ready to challenge for an NHL position.
