This is 2 years of Lav running some form of man to man most of the time that DOES NOT WORK. The Rangers are always near the NHL leaders giving up high danger chances. It is the height if arrogance to continue to run a system that clearly does not work and never change it. Igor and Quick have managed to cover up Lav's crap d system. I truly think Lav cares, but his lack of flexibility has put the Rangers behind the 8 ball night after night, unless Igor and Quick can stand on their heads. The Keystone Kops comments in the game threads have been around forever, the clear result of the man to man d breaking down. Man v man clearly works for some teams and it is great for causing turnovers and going on offense, but if you lose one individual battle or delay for a second somebody is wide open. That explains why the ice in front of the Rangers goal/slot/high slot is wide open so often.
I was able to watch the 3rd period last night and the Jets looked like they were playing with an extra man the entire period. Yes, they are a much better team than the Rangers, but the Rangers only had 5 shots on goal in the 3rd. The Jets pressed pressed the Rangers with a 1 goal lead. The Rangers were still getting hemmed in their own end for much of the period. Contrast that to the Caps game when the Rangers had a 1 goal lead and were backing up and getting stuck in their own end until they gave up the tying goal.
The Rangers own end has been a mess for years and it never gets fixed. That is on the head coach.

The Rangers continually make mistakes and choices on defense, high school players wouldn't make. The same game plan last year got them to heading into the third period of the conference final in a position to go up 3-0. No defensive system is going to work if you don't execute. Execution was a lot better last year than this year. Winnipeg's first goal was a 2 jets on 5 Rangers count them 5 rangers below the hash marks and the scorer was wide open for the tap in. That's beyond not executing thats don't give a fat rats ass. These guys are supposed to be NHL'ers and if they are not mentally capable or don't care enough to of carry out a game plan, then they shouldn't be around. And its on the coaches to make sure the game plan is carried out. And its on Drury to know who's doing the right thing here. And when you have a whole team lost out there it shouldn't be hard to figure out.

Its a combination of coaches getting their point across in a way that players can successfully follow it. And players having the due diligence to follow a game plan. Their is no zone defense on a back check, everybody grabs a guy. Its two d taking the first two offensive players and for really dumb teams you dummy it down so your center is ALWAYS high in offensive zone, so can be the third player back. If you have players with 1/2 a brain that follow orders its high guy in the offensive zone is always the third guy back. And one forward is always the high guy, usually last guy into the zone. That's not rocket science yet the Rangers can't even execute that. Mostly because they have three forwards to deep in the offensive zone. I coached Jr B and 16-20 year old kids understand that. I can't comprehend why the Rangers don't get that.
I don't disagree with you about the man on man defense the Rangers use with dmen chasing their guy all over the zone as out of touch. Whenever a Ranger dman chases a offensive player in the dzone, nobody goes to the front of the net to replace the dman. Time after time two dmen in the corner no one in front of the net. Ranger players rarely within a checking distance of a stick length from a opponent especially in front of the net. How many times this year have there been goals from the slot and no Ranger within 10 feet of the opposing shooter. If that's man on man defense, players aren't getting the message. Most nights you watch them play and its hard to tell wtf they are trying to do. These are supposedly elite professional athletes that are 100% capable of playing and executing any system. This team shows all the signs of being uninformed, unaccountable, to lazy, or to stupid to follow a game plan. Its a combination of coaching and players not buying in and doing what they are supposed to do. Night after night players doing the same stupid crap.
