We don't know the ins and outs of what goes on in Team offices. But this is a message/opinion board so opinions are welcome. And idea's of what might of happened welcome to. Taking a side in this trade is the usual posturing. Did Drury do the best he could? Did Drury set himself up by not being creative? Not sure what he could have done, but thats why he gets the big bucks. Maybe should have done something last summer. Its like this trade he had a concience and didn't want to hurt Panarin's feelings. Unlike how he dealt with Goodrow and Trouba. He could have played more hardball, sitting him from day 1 this season. Maybe that loosens up options. Frustration on my part and many others is Drury just sat back and waited for the enevitable. Hard to believe Panarin's comments about very little communication as this season went along.
Now that more info is coming out about the Panarin trade, it is clear that Panarin is more interested in where he will be living than money (2 x $11mill) or a chance at the Cup. He did give the Rangers a discount when he signed in 2019 so he remained consistent in not chasing a max contract. There are reports that he turned down 4 x $14million in Seattle and that his agent knew all along that LA was the only destination.
I am no fan of Drury, but it is hard to blame him for the return in this situation. I also doubt that Panarin would have signed a 2 x $11million contract with the Rangers. It has been great to watch his ability in the offensive end of the ice, but keeping him to the end of this season only would have made the draft position of the Rangers worse going forward and netted the Rangers nothing.
Ultimately, signing an age 34 Panarin for millions/multiple years in light of the current Rangers situation would have been stupid.
A GM should have known a month ago the Rangers would be sellers. Should have known he needed to maximize a Panarin return. Why he continues with the letters and advertising, he is dumping players, instead of operating quietly like other G.M’s, is beyond me. Most of the information out there claims it devalues the player to be traded. Based on Drury’s advertised sales results I won’t argue that.

Instructing your players agent to bring back one team for you to deal with is just stupid. Why not insist they come back with at least two options of who he will accept a trade to. Then at least Drury has two teams making offers knowing another team is in the loop. If the Panarin camp insists on only one team then Drury’s hammer is good luck July 1st cause you will be sitting til then. And those deals have a way of working out as time goes on. Rangers would be paying Panarin no Russia option. Just sit. And athletes don’t like that. That was Drurys only bargaining chip and did he use it? There have been no “insider” reports to suggest he did anything but play the hand he dealt himself. Setting a timeline or acceding to Panarin wishes to get it done prior to the Olympic break is also questionable and being discussed on a lot of media outlets. How do we know he didn't? Personally, I think this was Panny's way of making sure Drury got a minimal return on the deal.
Anything I've seen Drury told Panarin to find a team he'd accept a trade to. Not two. And I agree a mess. Nice chat and yes two different what ifs.
