Schneider’s problems are mostly the result of the quality of Ranger Asst coaches that the Rangers have employed to run the defence. Presently one David Quinn, with a shit NHL resume, but a Sullivan buddy.
If the Rangers are ever smart enough to hire a G.M. who is smart enough to hire a Head coach, who is smart enough to poach proven winning Asst coaches from WINNING organizations their might be some hope around here.
P.S. I also think that is a significant overpayment for a supposed third pair Dman.
Yup $5.5M is too much for a 3rd pair Dman. I still think he will be moved. I wonder how Sullivan is going to set the D for special teams. I hate Fox on the PK. He is a weakling. Need some physicality down low especially on the PK. I liked the progress from Robertson and Fortescue last year. We have a few nice pieces on D but can they DEFEND? That needs to come 1st. You have to win the puck before you can move the puck. Do you keep Vaakanainen as a 7? I wouldn't want Robertson or Fortescue sitting in the press box. With as many questions that Drury answered on D we still have questions. 2025-2026 NYR high danger shots against NHL rank - 8 - huge improvement by Sullivan/Quinn
Laviolette's system did not work with the d that he had and he did not change it. The NYR biggest problem in the d end was getting the puck out of the zone. This new 2nd pair should improve that stat this year.

That significant improvement in giving up high danger scoring chances, didn’t do much for the goals against totals improving. Under Laviolette it was 255 goals against and under Sullivan 250. Strange but raises many questions? Sullivans team gave up 153 high danger scoring chances against, and Laviolette’s team gave up 198. A big improvement that does not translate to goals against. Goals against is the money stat, and factual. Something went off the rails somewhere. Shestorokin facing that many fewer high danger shots with basically no improvement in G.A.A. No kudos from me till the G.A.A. Improves. I'd love to hear Sullivan and Quinn's explanation for how they gave up 46 less high danger scoring chances and yet allowed only 5 less goals against. It don't compute.
Take 10 games away from Igor, give 6 to Spencer Martin and be forced to use 40 year old Quick to often and against better comp vs Igor handling the better comp. 46 less high danger chances proves the system they are using works. The injuries explain the small reduction in goals.

IMO Quick performed yeoman work last year inevitably let down by lousy team play. Clearly evident when one watched. This is a team game, I don't see a healthy Fox and Shestorkin making a BIG difference. The Rangers sucked the last two seasons with them in the lineup. And the Rangers as a team were worse last year than the previous season. falling from 22nd overall to 30th last season. Rangers got a lot more work to do than getting Fox and Shestorokin healthy for the full schedule.
Is Dorayev, Pettersen, and Durzi enough. Remains to be seen. Pettersen is the big worry for me, he is a Sullivan get. 6'5" and weighs a buck 74. Pretty frail. And I don't forget how much Sullivan said playing Sheary was going to help last season. I'm sorry but little faith in Sullivan or this group again.

I feel like Sullivan did a pretty good job with the defense myself, and I do expect that to ultimately pay off, and I'm hopeful the two new guys plus year 2 of Robertson will make that end of the ice better, and be able to get the puck out more effectively. The overall challenge I think is going to remain generating 5v5 offense, and so I think if they're going to win games this year, they're probably going to have to concentrate more on keeping things close and then again relying on the PP.
Maybe Bjorkstrand and Miller bounce back. Perhaps Dorofeyev turns out to be a great investment, perhaps Perreault arrives a bit earlier than expected, and just maybe Lafreniere gets his game going consistently. That's a lot of ifs...it's clear that the offensive side has a lot of question marks on it, and hopefully having a bit more puck movement on the back end will help with that...hopefully.
I guess on the bright side, if it goes belly up again, the Rangers still have a good set of picks for next year's draft 🙂
