Just a reminder that Trouba can't be traded before July 1st without agreeing to it. On July 1st he submits a 15 team list of teams he will not accept a trade to, meaning there will be 16 that he can be traded to without first being consulted.
He has $8M left for two more seasons, so I would expect the number of teams who are not on the list AND could take on that number for a bottom 3 defender are probably small. But we'll see, there's trades made all the time for seemingly impossible to move contracts.

The $8M left for two more seasons is the cap hit. The Rangers only owe him $6M for each of the next two seasons (top heavy contract). If the Rangers trade him and agree to eat half the salary, are they eating $3M or $4M per? I'm guessing the cap hit would be $4M per. Seems like a better option than a buyout, which would be a $12M hit over 4 years.

Yeah the cap hit would be $8M (or whatever portion the Rangers would retain in a trade - up to a max of 50%). A buy out would result in $4M per for the next two and then $2M each for the next two, so a 50% retained trade would be better
