Suddenly lacking depth in goal, the Rangers announced today that they have signed Phil Osaer to an NHL contract and have called him up to back up Jussi Markkanen in goal. With Dunham and Labarbera both out injured, the training camp signee now finds himself with a potential to earn his first NHL minutes.
Brought into camp to help fill out the roster, Osaer beat out Scott Meyer for the backup job in Hartford and has gone on to be statistically one of the best goalies in the league. The former Ferris State netminder was originally drafted by St Louis in 1999 (7th round 203rd overall) but has spent his professional career bouncing between the AHL and ECHL.
In 2002-03 Osaer played for Trenton and Louisiana of the ECHL, but spent most of his time with the St Louis AHL farm team, the Worcester Ice Cats where he recorded a 9-9-3 record, a goals against average of 2.89 and a save percentage of .887.
