New York again added depth to their blueline today, signing unrestricted free agent Jason Marshall who was part of the San Jose Sharks team that went to the Western Conference Finals last spring. The 6’2″, 200lb Marshall joins his sixth NHL team after being drafted by the St Louis Blues in 1989 and playing with Anaheim, Washington, Minnesota and San Jose prior to his signing.
Marshall has appeared in 503 NHL contests and registered just 16 goals and 63 points, but has provided muscle on defense with 970 penalty minutes to his credit, surpassing the 100 penalty mark five times in his 14 year NHL career. With Marshall now signed, the Rangers have added a total of six defensemen to their rank this summer, including Trevor Gillies, Jeff MacMillan, Jason Strudwick, Jake Taylor and David Liffiton.
OTG’s Take:
Marshall largely is a depth defenseman who will fill the 5th/6th positions or potentially on the bench to provide depth in times of injury. The Rangers will be looking to him to be another veteran who can provide veteran leadership to a relatively young blueline corps, though one has to wonder whether his signing might force a player like Maxim Kondratiev out of the line-up.
