1926-27

The story of the 1926–27 New York Rangers season is one of the most impressive debuts in professional sports history. But they were New York’s second NHL team, following the New York Americans by one season.

Having recently rebuild Madison Square Garden, Developer and Promoter George “Tex” Rickard was looking for tenants and convinced notorious bootlegger Bill Dwyer to bring professional hockey to New York. Dwyer bought the idle Hamilton Tigers franchise and rights to their players for $75,000 and established the Americans as a team for the 1925-26 season.

2025-26

Mike Sullivan took over behind the Rangers bench for 2025-26

For the second straight season the Rangers missed the playoffs. Off-season tinkering and the introduction of Mike Sullivan behind the Rangers bench was not enough to overcome a significant lack of production up front. Mid-season injuries to and only hastened the issues, perhaps also contributing to the ultimate retirement of goaltender at the end of the season.

The problems were particularly acute on home ice, where the Rangers were shutout in their first three games and five times in their first seven. In fact of the six goals they did score in that span, five of them came in an OT loss to the lowly San Jose Sharks.
