The Rangers today announced that they have signed Marc Staal their 2005, 1st Round Draft Pick to a professional contract. From all accounts, Staal had impressed the Rangers brass with his mature play in training camp, allowing him to stick around long enough to play in the first preseason game against the Islanders. The 18 year old defenseman did not look out of place, and there’s already thoughts that he may be able to force his way into the Rangers line-up next year as a 19 year old.
Considered one of the best defensemen in the Ontario Hockey League, Marc is the younger brother of Carolina Hurricanes forward Eric Staal. The family fortunes don’t stop there, with younger brother Jordan expected to be a high first round draft pick next year, and a fourth brother who plays goal yet to be eligible for play in the CHL.
Analysis: Staal could well be kept round for a cameo appearance with New York, or at the very least have an extended tenure in Rangers camp. It would seem unlikely that he’ll stick with the team this year given the number of other defensemen on the roster ahead of him.
