Day: July 28, 2021

The Rangers have brought back 29 year old forward Greg McKegg on a one year contract after letting him go last off season as a UFA.  McKegg had 5 goals and 4 assists in 53 games with the Rangers, but struggled to break into the Boston Bruins last season with just four games despite injuries.

With 189 NHL games to his name now, McKegg will again factor as a depth forward the Rangers can call on in the event of injury or drop of form.  He’s best suited for the bottom six roles, playing a solid defensive game and able to chip in the odd goal.

As the NHL free agency period opened, the Rangers made a couple of moves to make the signing of defenseman Patrik Nemeth official and adding depth defender Jarred Tinordi to the roster.  The pair of blueline signings mean the Rangers are likely pretty set on defense, with Nemeth expected to be the third pair left defender, and Tinordi serving as first call up.

Just like we’ve seen throughout the offseason, both players bring size and some physicality to the line-up with Nemeth at 6-3 228 and Tinordi a lankier 6-6 205.  Tinordi in particular will catch fans attention for his scrimmage with Tom Wilson last season when he played for Boston.https://www.youtube.com/embed/wmwriDK8iAM

As 12:00pm Eastern drew closer, there was plenty of anticipation from Ranger fans expecting today to be the day that Rangers GM Chris Drury made a move to complete his offseason makeover of the roster.  Six hours later and the sum of the day was four free agent signings headlined by the signing of third pair defenseman Patrik Nemeth.

No Jack Eichel trade.  No Ryan Strome trade.  Not even a trade of backup netminder Alexandar Georgiev, on a day that saw seventeen netminders change teams via free agency and trades.
