The Rangers have brought back 29 year old forward Greg McKegg on a one year contract after letting him go last off season as a UFA. McKegg had 5 goals and 4 assists in 53 games with the Rangers, but struggled to break into the Boston Bruins last season with just four games despite injuries.
With 189 NHL games to his name now, McKegg will again factor as a depth forward the Rangers can call on in the event of injury or drop of form. He’s best suited for the bottom six roles, playing a solid defensive game and able to chip in the odd goal.
In addition to reuniting with McKegg, the Rangers have added fourth line left winger Dryden Hunt who was not qualified by the Phoenix Coyotes. The 25 year old lead the Coyotes with 18 hits per 60 minutes last year, and figures to be a candidate for a fourth line wing spot, bringing yet more physicality as Drury continues to retool.
It would seem likely that Sammy Blais and Hunt will compete for that final spot on the fourth line, with both bringing somehwat similar games and able to chip in a little offense.
