PRESEASON GAME 5: NYR v NJD 7:00pm TNT

Devils will again ice an AHL quality team (they're all in Prague), Rangers expected to have most of their starters in

Edstrom another goal some strong play, at this point I don’t see how they could keep Rempe over Edstrom. Mancini and Mackey looking good, I don’t see Ruhwedel beating out either one.

They don't have to keep Rempe over Edstrom. They have to keep Rempe over Brodzinski.
Rempe and Edstrom need to be the wingers on the 4th line for now.

Brodzynski shouldn't be in the conversation. That is if the Rangers want to be better. The third line with Cuylle, Kakko, and here's that word again a "healthy" Chytill will be much better. That means a fourth of Brodzynski and Vesey has to be improved. I waffle a bit on Vesey given his 13 goals last year and P.K. ability but didn't see him as very effective against Florida, and if the Rangers have plans on beating teams like that, your looking for a fourth line that can be effective against them. The status quo won't do especially since Drury thinks his top three lines will do, as evidenced by Smith and a "healthy" Chytill, there's that word again, being the only changes.

I've felt like Mackey has struggled a bit this preseason, including last night...though I'd still put him ahead of guys like Harpur and Fitzgerald. Thought Mancini continued his good plays. He makes some mistakes here and there, but seems to have some touch at both ends of the ice, and looks like he could still put on a few pounds, not that it's limiting him much right now. I would still put Ruhwedel ahead of Mackey, though I'm not a huge Ruhwedel fan, he's definitely a 7th d-man type.
Edstrom has really had a great pre-season, and probably gets the nod because of the Vesey injury. Will be interesting to see how he goes, as I think he's pretty much a lock to make the team at the moment, along with Rempe.
Carrick might end up being another in a line of failed 4th liners the NYR have been going through. Seems to have an edge, but can see why he's been a tweener the last few years...and that I think Brodzinski might be the one competing with him there, though obviously different styles. Will have to see how Carrick does in the regular season (assuming he plays), but would like to see a bit more before I make a lasting impression.
One other additional note from last night was how quickly Trocheck just turned his game up and started to dominate. This might go down as Drury's best signing, if it isn't already.

Another thing to consider around who makes the team is Cap Space. As I understand it, they could put Vesey and Lindgren on LTIR (minimum 10 games missed), and that would allow them to exceed the Cap while they're on LTIR. However you would be banking zero Cap space during that period, and that would hurt them come the deadline...assuming they both come back before that (they are week-to-week after all, and not month-to-month)
Alternatively the Rangers go with 23 man roster (with Vesey and Lindgren just regular injuries) and they would bank some space. If they have to call up more, then they would obviously eat into that space.
If you figure at the moment the 21 healthy roster would have Brodzinski as the lone healthy scratch

I don't see Mackey and Mancini on a third pair hurting the Rangers. Coach has to work with them to start. If Drury is that much in love with jones at least Mancini. Mancini and Mackey can give the third pair a whole new physical look and if developed could turn into a pair that plays against any opposing line by playoffs and what a boost that would be for the Rangers.
