Rumors out there today that Zibanejad's name is also out there, though sounds like more just a "gauge value" sort of thing so far. Additionally some chatter that they're talking to Ottawa (though feelin-out stage from what it sounds like). Nothing smoking yet, just chatter.
Zib's contract is a "5 more years after this season" nightmare w/8.5 cap hit. His actual payment next year is 10.5million with a long no movement clause. He would be very hard to move w/o a lot of help.
I think there's some logic to trading Shesterkin, however I think if you do you're basically giving up on the team for the next few years, and it would seemingly put Drury's in the firing line. So I doubt that will happen. I think mitigating that is the possibility of the salary cap advancing quickly, which would make the contract age a lot better...if that happens, then $13M on Shesterkin becomes a lot more easy to work with.They've only got another a couple from Panarin and Kreider (assuming they both stay) as well as Trouba, so there's some bigger numbers coming off the books or perhaps changing anyway.
I do not think the Rangers/Dolan would ever have the balls to trade Shesterkin. But it should be discussed. If they got an NHL goalie back and a decent NHL skater, the Rangers would not be giving up the Cup hunt for a few years. Yes, Igor's potential contract will fit in better as the cap moves up, but that's what the Rangers thought with Trouba and Panarin and the cap was stagnant for 4 years from covid.
I think the challenges on defense probably start with Lindgren and Trouba (but you're going to need more than Jones and Mancini stepping up), and you have to wonder whether Miller becomes part of that change. He's regressed and his next contract could be a real problem too.Changing the defense wholesale though is very hard to do quickly, so it will depend on what you're doing.
The left side of the D has 2 big question marks. Lindgren is not playing well in addition to his accumulated abuse. Miller is still Mr Potential who still makes tons of mistakes. Let another team fix him. I like Jones, but is it wise to keep him and Fox? I think he will be a decent move the puck guy. Lindgren is an unrestricted free agent. He should be traded. Both Miller (25) and Jones (24) are restricted free agents and will have decent value. Jones is actually a bargain and could end up being similar to Pionk. Trouba probably will have some takers with the right deal.
As long as this "who is being traded" hangs over the Rangers they will continue to struggle.

If Trouba doesn't accept a trade will supposedly be placed on waivers at 2pm EST today. Drury is going to have to do some explaining with future UFA signings, why he won't do this with them. Agents are going to be aware of Goodrow then Trouba if he does get waived, and it could be difference maker in losing potential future UFA signings..

In the case of Trouba, Davidson and Gorton really put themselves in a bad spot negotiating. They had acquired Trouba in a trade in late June, but he did not have a contract, and then added Panarin to a huge contract less than 14 days later. They basically had little to no leverage over Trouba, and ultimately negotiated against themselves because they'd already sold the two as the "Accelerated Rebuild". They had to buy out Shattenkirk as it was to make it work.
As for guys like Trocheck and Zibanejad, those NMCs (and term) were used to lower the cap number and allow them to fit them in under a constrained cap. Certainly NMCs are a problem, but the Cap (prior to this year) has been a significant problem for the previous 4 years.
I don't like the NMCs, but recognize you probably don't get the contracts done without them.
