I think he's better than a plug, but we'll see. Certainly the 1st round pick is a high cost, especially when they traded 2 firsts for Dorofeyev as well, but I am hopeful he'll fit in pretty well as a second pair defenseman. He was the best dman on the Penguins in his last year or so with the Penguins, though Letang was having all his health issues, and the team as a whole was pretty awful.
You can certainly argue whether Drury's retool approach is the right one, he's trying to get the most out of the remaining good years from Fox, Shesterkin and Zibanejad, so I can see the logic. Just wish he'd done this two years ago instead of screwing things up...and I also still hate that Miller trade.
2030 first is meaningless right now and also beyond Drury's sell date. Unless the NYR win the actual first pick in 2030 somehow and there is a generational talent, the reality is that first pick guy might show up in 2034.
Like Fish said, they still have Fox/Igor/and a few years left from Zib. You need talent of at least a decent level if you want the young guys to have a chance. They are never going to San Jose the NYR.

Pittsburgh was not a good team with Petterssen as "best" defenseman. The Rangers will be the same as those Pittsburgh teams, who had Crosby, Malkin who are debatably still better than any Ranger, more years of no playoffs. Wandering around out of the playoffs, contributions by Petterssen and more so because Sullivan is coaching. Obtaining the best defenseman off a non playoff team is not anything for a new team to get excited about. And a 2030 first round pick means 2 out of next three years the Rangers watch the first round. But of course if your drafting Lias, Kravtov, and Othmann why worry about a pick. But I think they are actually starting to draft some realistic future Rangers so those picks are very important. Its one thing to trade top picks to try to win a Cup. Losers trade them to just try to be respectable. And that's where this team is going, will they even be respectable?
All true, but Pettersson is not coming here to displace Gavrikov as the #1LD. There will be less pressure on Pettersson on #2D pair. Plus if Gav gets hurt, Pettersson can slide up as a reasonable replacement for Gav. Pettersson solidifies the D. As for 1st round picks - you highlighted what can happen with lots of misses. Additionally, Fox can be moved at some point and may get a 1st back. As for where the team is going - last year's mess was somewhat related to injuries to top guys - Fox multiple, Igor, Miller was injured the whole year, Trocheck. Add in Edstrom, Rempe as they were expected to be 4th line starters. They had a chance to make the playoffs without the injuries, but they did not have enough depth to make up for the injuries. The current moves have upgraded the depth. We also saw some juice at the end of the year from some of the younger guys like Perreault, kartye, Chmelar, Laba, Sykora. Laf even looked better without Panarin. Maybe with better 3/4lines they can manage the minutes better over the forwards. I think that will only be better this year with good odds to make the playoffs.
