What Should We Expect For The Coming Season?

by Dave Gokhstein

A lot has happen since my last article on Outsidethegarden.com. The Rangers hired Brian Trottier (Which let me add, Was my pick to become the new coach of the New York Rangers). While a lot of people have doubts that Trottier can come in here and turn the Rangers into a playoff team, I say this. Brian Trottier has been around “Winning” everywhere he has went. What makes anyone thing he’ll start losing now. “And please stop sending me e-mails saying he’s a former Islander. As long as he wins, you shouldn’t give a damn.”

The Rangers also went out and made two huge signings in Bobby Holik and Darius Kasparaitis. A lot of people say that the Rangers overpaid for Holik’s services. Let me say this right now, Holik is worth every single penny. Holik’s the type of player that Rangers have been missing for the past 5 years. He brings a mean nasty edge with him. There aren’t a lot of 2-way Center’s out there who can score and play defense and get on people’s nerves like Holik can. So i repeat, He’s worth every single penny he gets.

With Kasparaitis, The Rangers receive one of the most hard hitting defensemen in the NHL today. Kasparaitis also brings that nasty edge with him that the Ranger blueline has been missing for the past 5 years.  It’s a sure bet that opposing players will think twice before skating into the Rangers zone with their head down without getting clocked by Kaspar. (Quick note, Sure Kaspar will often put himself out of position to try to knock someone’s head off, But he’s a much improved defensemen now after playing in the Av’s system.)

Sather’s biggest move this off-season though was re-signing Mike Richter. Unlike what other people have said, Sather never wanted to sign Cujo or any other free agent goalie on the market. Sather’s first and only choice was to re-sign Richter.  With Richter, Every single Ranger fan knows what you get. You get a player who never quits. A player who is willing to break his body into pieces to keep the puck out of the net. Plus, There’s no one better out there to help Dan Blackburn become the Rangers future Number One Goalie. Sather still has some work cut out for him though. He still has to find depth at the Wing position.

There are rumors floating around that the Rangers might try to go after Jarome Iginla if the Flames can’t work out a deal with Iginla. But that’s a longshot. Sather will most probably insert youth into the line-up to fill holes, Rather then give away the farm system. I hope Ranger fans also aren’t forgetting that Pavel Bure will play a full season this year for the New York Rangers. Heck, He scored 12 goals in 12 goals, I’m thinking he might just scored 80 goals this season playing with Eric Lindros.  So Rangers fans, Expect this. Only injuries can stop that Rangers from making the playoffs this upcoming season. Nothing else.

Other News and Notes

Nedved will have a bounce back year this upcoming season. Nedved has been training hard this off-season. He’s added muscle and has been working on his game. He’ll most likely end up playing wing on Holik’s line.
But rumor has it that they’ll try him out on the first line first.

If Nedved does (most likely) play wing on Holik’s line, The Rangers should put Jamie Lundmark on the first line. It’s time to see what this kids got.

Dvorak should only miss a few games into the season. Rico Fata would be a good replacement till he comes back.

Last thing, What exactly does Gary Bettman have against the Rangers? I wonder if Guerin’s contract will be reviewed.
