Per Larry Brooks on Twitter, Sean Avery has been placed on waivers, This means Erik Christensen will get the 13th spot and Avery will be reassigned to Connevticut if he clears by noon tomorrow. The move is moderately surprising given Christensen’s so-so form in the preseason, but Tortorella and Avery have never seemed to be able to get on the same page.
The Grate One had been a healthy scratch the past two games, while Christensen had played both against HC Slovan Bratislava and EV Zug.
Having been placed on waivers Avery’s career with the Rangers appears almost certainly over. In the last year of a four year contract that he signed with Dallas back in 2008, he will now likely finish out the season playing in the AHL.
Also placed on waivers were defensemen Stu Bickel and Brendan Bell. The move means that Mike Sauer is almost certainly healthy enough to play Friday, though it could also mean the Rangers are looking to make some room to perhaps sign an additional defender.
