I'm guessing it was the right side vs left side thing, but there'd been some rumors this week that the NYR liked Smits, and it seems like the consensus is that Smits is more ready for the NHL...guess we'll see.
To me the draft is about using your scouting staff to draft the guy at your spot in the draft, to get the player you think will be the best player, regardless of position or need. Smits might fill a need, but was he the best defenseman still on the table?

Time tells all, I guess we wait and see Fish. Highlights of Carel showed him doing some pretty incredible stuff. Loved his skating and his smarts in the O Zone.

Carels has good defence same as Šmits has some offence. Carels, Reid and Šmits were the big dogs on defence and 100 NHL games for each should tell all.
