The Rangers announced three more cuts to the training camp roster today, leaving 46 players remaining heading into tonight’s game against the Islanders. Perhaps a modest surprise is the inclusion of defenseman Sean Day as one of the three.
Day was yet to be rostered to play a preseason game, and has plenty of competition for spots on the blueline. At 19 years old, there’s no rush for the 2016 3rd round pick, but there’s still some concern that his development trajectory might not be going quite as planned.
Sergey Zborovskiy did get some time in Game 1 of the preseason, but was almost certainly destined to start the year in the AHL. Dawson Leedahl, an offseason signing of an undrafted free agent, also looked certain to go to the AHL, especially with no rostered appearances in the first three games.
While these cuts were a little unexpected in their timing, more are expected tomorrow.
