Disagreements Caused Richards Decision

If you’re wondering what exactly the Rangers were thinking when they decided to keep Richards, then you’re not alone.  The general consensus outside the Rangers was to buy-out the veteran center who has seven more seasons remaining on his nine year contract.

Within the Rangers hierarchy, it appears it may not have been quite so unanimous, at least if you are to believe Louis Jean of TVA Sports in Montreal.

The Rangers will now take a risk that Brad Richards won’t require post season surgery – or for that matter sustain a concussion or other long term injury – during the regular season.

It also means that the chances of Ryane Clowe returning are lower, with the Rangers still needing to sign RFAs Ryan McDonaghMats ZuccarelloDerek Stepan and Carl Hagelin, along with perhaps re-signing UFA Steve Eminger again.  All for under $14.1M.

Richards was reportedly told by the team yesterday that he will not be bought out.

Ah, kind of was one of the guys on ESPN when I was first getting into hockey.  Didn't mind him, was at a time when ESPN knew what to do with the NHL.
