Chris Drury

Let’s Get Started

I’ve been a Rangers fan since I was about ten years old. Right around the time when they won the Holy Grail of hockey. At the time you could say that I jumped on the band wagon but I’ve never stopped loving those blueshirts. With every up, and many downs, I still watch and cheer with every win, big trade or signing.

But here’s my problem and their are many. Why is Chris Drury our captain? I don’t see him has a leader or has an inspiration to the team. I’ll admit he has a great work ethic and he toughs out his injuries (anybody remember the broken hand he played with at the beginning of the playoffs) but the man doesn’t produce the goals they need like he did in Buffalo or Calgary or Colorado. The year he went into free agency when the Rangers signed him he had 37G 32A for a total of 69 points. He never put up numbers like that in his previous seasons.

In my opinion Drury played the way he did due to the fact he was gonna be a free agent and he knew Glen Sather is a sucker for big names at big costs. Now trust me when I tell you that he is a very good player and given a great range of talent. It’s just to me, he doesn’t deserve to be the Captain.

My brother once told me,”When the Captain cries, we all cry.” I later watched a video of the greatest Rangers moments in History. One of them being Mark Messiers’ number being strung up to the rafters. The Messiah was bawling like a little baby and I started to get emotional. The man did so much for the Rangers other than bringing the Stanley Cup back to New York. He was a true leader to the New York Rangers. Every man that takes the responsibility to wear the glorious “C” has to live up to the expectations of what Messier exemplified.

With Marion Gaborik now on the Rangers I feel he should be there Captain. Maybe even Ryan Callahan or Brandon Dubinsky. They’re both the future of this team and they both had strong seasons last year, especially Callahan. Dubinsky is being groomed to be a first line center for the club. Odds are he’ll be in that position in about two to three months pending another signing or trade.

I guess Chris Drury will have to do for now. Like I said he’s good player but not worth being the Captain. To me unless he scores, he’s almost invisible on the team. Maybe he’ll have a better season this time around. Maybe having Ales Kotalik back on his line like he did in Buffalo will help kick things up a notch. We’ll just have to wait and see. Till next time Ranger faithful.
