The New York Rangers have announced that they have signed veteran center Luke Glendening to a one-year contract worth $850,000. The contract announcement comes just three days after they signed the 37-year-old veteran to a PTO as they continue to search for a replacement for the injured Joe Veleno.
Glendening split time between the New Jersey Devils and Philadelphia Flyers last year, tallying 2 goals and 7 assists in 70 games. While largely ineffective with the Devils, he saw a bump in production and ice time with the Flyers to finish off the season.
The move comes after the Rangers had tried both Cole Beaudoin and Justin Dowling in the role, and apparently were not satisfied with either option. How much Glendening has left in the tank remains to be seen, but was 51.7 and 57.2 respectively for the Devils and Flyers in the faceoff circle last season.
He also saw time killing penalties, giving Mike Sullivan another option should he go that route.
It’s unlikely we’ll see much impact from the veteran, but the cost and term means that they could easily bury his contract in Hartford if it doesn’t work out.
