Glen Sather’s search for a coach for his New York Rangers continues with some surprising, and unusual twist’s this past week. What some would think would be one of the most sought after jobs in the NHL, has become a difficult position to fill for the Rangers GM. With Ken Hitchcock going to the Flyers, Dave Tippetts to Dallas, Mike Keenan locked up in Florida, and the front runner for the job, Herb Brooks, surprisingly taking himself out of the picture at the last minute, Sather has been left scrambling to find some new candidates for the job. Or has he?
Sather’ history of patience, and unwillingness to be manipulated or influenced by players, fan’s or media, has left many wondering as to what exactly the situation is here on Broadway. Has Sather been taken by surprise with the twists and turns that have developed and been left scrambling to hire a new bench boss, or has his mind been made up all along as to who his choice is? Is he in the process of trying to pry Mike Keenan out of Florida? Will Mark Messier announce his retirement, and, at that very same press conference, be named the new head coach? One thing’s for sure, Sather’s not telling.
One question that should arise however, is, how appealing would a team, with no head coach be come July 1st to the very large list of big name UFAs? Once again, the Rangers faithful are left saying to themselves, “Time will tell”. Sather’s decisions thus far have been met with mixed emotions. His decision as to who runs the club from behind the bench next season, will be a huge factor with regards to his popularity and support from both players and fans. Time will tell Blueshirt fans….Time will tell!!!
