The Rangers today announced they would not bring coach Ron Low back for a third year. Low, who’s contract expired with the Rangers failure to make the post-season for the fifth straight season, leaves the Rangers after two years and a 69-81-9-5 record.
New York struggled during Low’s tenure on both defense and specialty teams. giving up 290 and 258 goals respectively. The Penalty Kill finished last in the league this season and many attributed the failure of the Rangers to keep the goal out of their net to the coaching staff.
Glen Sather refused to go into details on why he won’t renew Low’s contract but did go on to say that Ron Low has a place with the New York Rangers if he is unable to get another job.
Speculation on Low’s replacement centers around former Stars coach Ken Hitchcock who was fired earlier this season. When questioned about his interest in Hitchcock, Sather said he was interested because of Hitchcock’s history.
