Quinn Gets First Win

Last night the Rangers picked up their first win of the season, coming from 2-1 down to score in the final three minutes of regulation and then just over 30 seconds into overtime.  Ir was the first tmie in franchise history that the Rangers have done this, with two defensemen scoring the goals within the last three minutes and in overtime.

They’ve done something similar as recently as March of 2014 when they been the Coyotes with goals to Girardi at 16:32 of the third period, and then the game winner by Ryan McDonagh at 1:56.

The win was the first for David Quinn in his fourth game, and leaves the team 1-3-0 after four games, making him the 35th coach to record a victory behind the bench of the Blueshirts.  He’ll need four more to catch Tom Webster who went 5-9-4 in a short 18 game stint that was cut short by illness.

It was the first overtime goal of his career for Brady Skjei, and just the second time he’s recorded the game winner, having also registered one last year.  Overall it was his first of the season, and tenth of his career.

Brendan Smith equalled his Ranger career high with his first goal of the season.  In his previous two seasons with the club, he has recorded a goal, though both were abbreviated stints.  His career high is actually five goals, set back in 2013-14 with the Detroit Red Wings.

Other Stats and Milestones:

  • Henrik Lundqvist played his 808th regular season game and is now just three behind Jim Neilson for 8th all time on the Rangers.  He recorded his 432nd regular season win, which places him five behind Jacques Plante for 7th all time in the NHL
  • Mats Zuccarello added an assist, his third in four games, to take his career total points to 318, which ties him with Mark Pavelich for 35th all time
  • Chris Kreider recorded his first assist of the season, and 115th overall, that ties Marian Gaborki and Clint Smith for 76th all time
  • Fredrik Claesson became the 1055th Ranger to dress in a regular season game, and finished with +1 plus/minus and 5 shots on goal
  • Brett Howden now has 2 goals – tied for fourth for NHL rookies – and 3 points – tied for 6th

Plus he is cheap and on a 1 year contract. He will be easy to move. They only have about 1 million in cap left right now.
