Chad Johnson

First Cuts Are The Deepest

The Rangers announced today that they have reassigned twenty five players to the minor leagues and juniors. Fifteen players were sent down to the Hartford Wolf Pack, which started it’s last official camp before converting to the Connecticut Whale later in the year, and another ten to Canadian Juniors.

The moves mean there are 38 players remaining on the training camp roster, battling for a maximum of 23 spots. Positionally there are now 22 forwards, 13 defensemen and 3 goaltenders remaining with the Blueshirts, with several more cuts expected after completion of games against the Devils and Red Wings this weekend.

We can expect another 10-12 forwards, 5-7 defensemen and 1 goaltender – Chad Johnson, to be cut from the camp.

No big surprises at this stage, though Michael Sauer, Mats Zuccarello Aasen, Derek StepanDale WeiseChad Johnson and Ryan McDonagh all made it through the first round despite having already seen preseason action last night. Other names who are yet to play, but remain with the team include Jeremy WilliamsKris NewburyPavel Valentenko and Evgeny Grachev, all of whom are expected to see some action over the weekend.
